A supplement label is a peculiar object. It looks like a source of information, a neat panel of names and numbers, and it is written to feel authoritative and reassuring. But it is really a legal document dressed as a fact sheet, drafted to satisfy regulations and flatter the product at the same time. Most of the reassuring parts are marketing, and most of the genuinely useful information is either buried, phrased to mislead, or absent in a way the design hopes you will not notice.

The good news is that reading a label properly is a learnable skill, and it comes down to a small number of things. You do not need to understand every additive or decode every Latin name. You need to know where the real information lives, which four features actually separate a solid product from an expensive placebo, and which single word on a panel should make you put the bottle back. Once you can do that, a great deal of supplement marketing simply stops working on you, which is the entire aim.

This guide is deliberately practical. Four checks, in order of importance, each with the trick it defends against. Learn them and you will spend less and get more, and you will stop paying premium prices for products that quietly deliver less than the label implies.

Why the label is built to reassure, not inform

That percentage tells you the potency, and potency is what a study actually measured.

This matters because the active content of a raw herb varies wildly with the plant, the growing conditions, the part used and the processing. A label that says 500mg of a herb, with no standardisation, is telling you the weight of the powder and almost nothing about how much active compound is in it. Two products at the same milligram number can differ several-fold in potency. When a clinical trial reports a benefit, it used a standardised extract at a known active dose, so matching that benefit means matching that standardisation, not just the raw weight.

Check two: proprietary blends

The word to watch for is proprietary blend, and it should trigger immediate scepticism. A proprietary blend lists several ingredients together under one combined weight, for instance a focus blend at 800mg, without disclosing how much of each ingredient the 800mg contains.

The justification offered is recipe protection, keeping a formula secret from competitors. The practical effect is concealment. Because the ingredients are listed in order of quantity, a blend often leads with a cheap bulk filler and follows with the exciting, heavily marketed ingredients present in token amounts, all hidden inside the single total. You are shown a list of impressive names and denied the one piece of information that would tell you whether any of them is dosed to do anything. More often than not, the ingredient on the front of the pack is a pinch, and the blend exists precisely so you cannot see that.

The practical rule: prefer products that disclose the dose of every active ingredient. Treat a proprietary blend as a reason to distrust the product unless there is a compelling, transparent reason for it, and there rarely is. Hidden doses usually mean doses too small to want disclosed.

Check three: third-party testing

The first two checks assume the label is honest about what it contains. Third-party testing is what verifies that assumption, which is why it may be the single most valuable marker on a package.

Independent testing means an outside laboratory, not the manufacturer, has verified that the product actually contains what the label claims, at the stated amount, without certain contaminants. It is worth being clear about what testing does and does not tell you: it does not prove the ingredient works, which is a separate question of evidence. It proves you are getting the dose you paid for, in the product you think you bought.

That is not a trivial guarantee, because label mismatch is real and documented. A smaller, standardised, independently tested dose beats a bigger, unverified, unstandardised one nearly every time, and usually costs about the same.

None of this requires expertise. It requires knowing where to look and being willing to put back the products that fail the checks, even attractive ones. That willingness is most of the skill.

A note on safety and honest reading

Two safety-adjacent points are worth stating. A short, transparent ingredient list is generally a better sign than a long one padded with unfamiliar additives, and if you have allergies or intolerances the full ingredient list, including excipients, is worth scanning rather than trusting the front of the pack. And the elemental-weight and dose-accuracy issues are mild safety matters as well as value ones, because a product that can contain more than its label, as some do, means you might take more of an active than you intended.

A product has none of these markers but is cheap. Is it a scam?
