Most people do not decide they have a grinding problem. A dentist points to a flattened molar, or a partner mentions the noise, or a jaw that aches on waking finally gets a name. By the time the word bruxism enters the picture, the search that follows almost always lands on the same answer: take magnesium. Type "how to stop grinding my teeth" into any search bar and the aisle is waiting, a bottle promising to relax the muscle that will not switch off.

The problem is that the promise runs ahead of the evidence. Grinding is not a magnesium deficiency, and no capsule has been shown to stop it. That does not make a calm-and-sleep approach useless. It means the honest version is narrower and more useful than the marketing one: a supplement can sometimes ease the tension and the drivers around the edges, while the actual protection of your teeth and the real work on the cause happen elsewhere. What is bruxism?

Bruxism is the medical term for grinding or clenching the teeth. It shows up in two distinct patterns that are worth separating, because they respond to different things.

Why magnesium is everywhere, and what the evidence actually says

Magnesium earns its reputation honestly in one respect. It is a genuine cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems, including ones that govern muscle and nerve function [1]. From there, the reasoning runs: if magnesium is involved in muscle relaxation, surely it relaxes a clenched jaw. It is a tidy story, and it is largely untested.

No clinical trial has evaluated magnesium for bruxism. When a claim has no direct evidence, the fair move is to look at the nearest thing that has been tested, and for magnesium and involuntary muscle over-activity, that is night-time leg cramps. Here the evidence is not thin, it is clear, and it does not favour magnesium. A Cochrane review of 11 trials in 735 people concluded that magnesium is unlikely to provide clinically meaningful cramp relief in older adults, with the proportion of people getting a worthwhile reduction no different from placebo at high certainty [2]. If magnesium does not reliably quiet the involuntary muscle contractions of a cramp, the assumption that it quiets the involuntary contractions of grinding deserves real scepticism.

Where magnesium has a modest, real signal is sleep, and that is the more defensible route to it here. The dedicated meta-analysis found only three small trials of very low quality and no significant effect on total sleep time [3], so this is a small effect, not a strong one. But better sleep can reduce the arousals that sleep bruxism rides on, which is a more plausible mechanism than direct muscle relaxation. The takeaway is not "magnesium does nothing," it is "if you try magnesium, try it for calm and sleep, and keep your expectations honest."

One more honest note on form. Magnesium glycinate is often sold as the best-absorbed version. The primary nutrition authority does not rank it as best absorbed, and one head-to-head trial did not favour it on absorption at all. What glycinate can genuinely claim is tolerability: it is a gentle form, not among those most likely to cause loose stools [1]. So choose glycinate for comfort, not for a jaw-specific advantage that does not exist.

The stress and sleep drivers, and where herbs fit

If the grinding itself is hard to switch off with a supplement, the drivers are more workable. Awake bruxism tracks with stress and tension, and this is where the adaptogen and calming-herb category has a reasonable, if indirect, role.

Ashwagandha is the best-evidenced botanical for the stress side. That is a moderate grade, and it is honest to say ashwagandha addresses the stress load that can feed daytime clenching, not the grinding behaviour directly. Gentler calming options such as chamomile as an evening ritual sit in the same bracket: plausible support for winding down, not a treatment for bruxism.

The logic to hold onto is this. A tense, wired nervous system is a reasonable target if your clenching is stress-linked. Calmer evenings and better sleep are reasonable targets if your grinding is night-time and arousal-linked. Neither is a substitute for protecting the teeth, and neither should be sold to you as a cure.

What this means for you

Start with a dentist. This is the single most important step, and it is not optional. A dentist can confirm that grinding is the cause of what you are noticing, protect the teeth from further wear with a fitted night guard, and, where relevant, refer you for assessment of sleep-disordered breathing, which sometimes travels with sleep bruxism.
