In a double-blind crossover study, physicians on night duty taking 170mg a day showed better composite mental performance and roughly a fifth less fatigue on cognitive testing, with the largest gains in the first two weeks [3]. A later randomised trial in adults with stress-related fatigue used a higher dose and found improved concentration and a reduced cortisol response to waking [4].

That is a more coherent anti-fatigue signal than most herbs manage. The honest caveat is study quality. The trials are small, several come from the same research lineage, and systematic reviews have flagged methodological limitations across the rhodiola literature. So the direction is promising and the mechanism plausible, but the evidence is not yet strong. For a person whose problem is stress-related mental fatigue and who wants a gentle, non-stimulant option, rhodiola is the most defensible pick here. Just do not expect a coffee-strength result.

Ginseng: traditional use, thinner proof

Panax ginseng is one of the most sold herbs on earth for energy, which makes its actual evidence a useful lesson in reading past popularity. Europe's regulator, the European Medicines Agency, grants ginseng traditional use only, for symptoms of asthenia such as fatigue and weakness, and states plainly that this rests on long-standing use rather than clinical proof [6]. Its stronger, well-established-use column for ginseng is empty.

The trial picture matches that caution. The largest fatigue meta-analysis, pooling 19 randomised trials, found no significant reduction in fatigue severity overall, with only small effects in subgroups such as general and chronic fatigue [5]. Cancer-related fatigue was null. So ginseng is not nothing, but its fatigue effect is small and inconsistent, and the honest framing is traditional use, not clinically proven energy.

Ginseng also carries the clearest safety flags of this group. It can modestly lower fasting blood glucose, which matters if you take diabetes medication; insomnia is its most common side effect; and there is a case report of it interacting with the MAOI antidepressant phenelzine [5][6]. It should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Grade: limited, traditional use. Widely sold, modestly evidenced, and with real interaction cautions.

Cordyceps: preliminary, often studied as a blend

Cordyceps, a genus of fungi, is marketed hard for stamina and endurance. The human evidence is a handful of small exercise trials. A double-blind trial of the fermented Cs-4 form in healthy older adults found a significant rise in maximal oxygen uptake and anaerobic threshold after six weeks compared with placebo [7]. A separate trial of a mushroom blend containing Cordyceps militaris found improved high-intensity exercise tolerance and oxygen uptake after three weeks [8].

Two honesty notes matter here. The trials are small, and the militaris study used a blend, so the effect cannot be pinned on cordyceps alone. This is early, exercise-focused evidence, not established support for everyday energy or focus. Cordyceps is interesting and low on reported harm, but it belongs in the preliminary column.

Grade: preliminary. A couple of small exercise-capacity trials, often on blends, nothing that supports broad energy claims.

What this means for you

Match the tool to the actual problem rather than reaching for whatever is trending.

If your issue is jitter from caffeine, add L-theanine to the caffeine you already use, around 100 to 200mg, rather than hunting for a replacement. If your issue is stress-related mental fatigue, rhodiola is the most evidence-backed caffeine-free option, commonly dosed at 200 to 600mg of a standardised extract taken earlier in the day. If you are drawn to ginseng, use it with clear expectations and awareness of its blood-sugar and sleep effects. If you want to try cordyceps, treat it as an experiment around training rather than a daily energy fix.

Timing protects your sleep. Ginseng in particular can disturb sleep, and anything taken late that nudges alertness can cost you the rest that would fix the fatigue in the first place. Keep these to the morning or early afternoon.

The unglamorous truth outperforms all of them. Consistent sleep, daylight early in the day, movement, hydration and not running a chronic caffeine debt do more for day-to-day energy than any supplement in this list. Use these as a modest prop while you fix the basics, not as a way to avoid fixing them.

Who should be cautious

Ginseng deserves the most care.
