Chamomile does something for sleep, but probably not what the marketing implies. The evidence points to a modest improvement in how people rate their sleep, driven as much by ritual as by chemistry.

Chamomile is the tea you reach for when you want to signal to yourself that the day is over. It sits in almost every "natural sleep aid" list, usually near the top, usually with a confident claim that it relaxes the mind and eases you into sleep. It is soothing, it is caffeine-free, and generations of people swear by a cup before bed. So the honest question is not whether people like it. It is whether the tea itself is doing the work, or whether the ritual around it is.
That distinction matters more than it sounds. If chamomile is a genuine sedative, you would expect it to change measurable sleep: how long you take to drop off, how much of the night you spend asleep, how you function the next day. If it is mostly a calming ritual with a mild chemical assist, you would expect people to feel their sleep is better without those hard numbers shifting much. The research points fairly clearly to the second picture, and that is a more useful thing to know than any breathless claim.
This article lays out what chamomile actually contains, what the trials show and where they stop, and how to use it sensibly if a warm cup is part of your evening. It also flags the two safety points that get glossed over: the allergy risk and a blood-thinner interaction.
Chamomile is the dried flower of Matricaria chamomilla, a small daisy-family plant used across European and Middle Eastern herbal traditions. Its calming reputation is usually pinned on a single compound: apigenin, a flavonoid that binds to benzodiazepine sites on GABA-A receptors in laboratory studies [4]. GABA is the brain's main calming neurotransmitter, so a compound that engages that system offers a plausible route to mild relaxation.
That is the mechanism in one sentence, and it is worth holding it loosely. Binding at a receptor in a dish is a long way from a strong sedative effect in a mug of tea, where the delivered dose of apigenin is small. The mechanism is real and plausible. It is also modest. Keeping those two facts together is the whole game with chamomile.
Here is where honesty earns its keep. Two independent meta-analyses have looked at chamomile and sleep, and they broadly agree on a modest, specific finding.
A 2019 systematic review and meta-analysis of twelve randomised trials found a statistically significant improvement in sleep quality with chamomile, alongside a real effect on generalised anxiety symptoms, but little evidence of benefit for state anxiety or for insomnia specifically [1]. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of ten trials in 772 participants likewise found that subjective sleep quality, measured on a standard questionnaire, improved with chamomile [2]. So far, so encouraging.
But read the 2024 analysis carefully, because it is candid about its own limits. The improvement in sleep quality came with very high statistical heterogeneity, meaning the trials disagreed with each other a great deal. Sleep efficiency, the proportion of time in bed actually spent asleep, did not change and even worsened in one study. Daytime functioning did not improve in any of the three trials that measured it. And only one study checked the purity or potency of the chamomile used [2].
Put those pieces together and a clear pattern emerges: people rate their sleep as better, while the objective measures of sleep largely stay put. That is the classic profile of a calming ritual, not a pharmacological sedative. It is worth saying out loud, because the marketing implies the opposite.
The regulators reinforce the point by what they decline to endorse. European authorities register chamomile for minor digestive complaints, mouth and throat irritation, and certain skin uses. They do not register it as a sedative or sleep aid at all [3]. And the US NCCIH notes that a review of chamomile use found one insomnia study, which found no benefit for that sleep disorder [4]. None of this makes chamomile useless. It makes it modest, and specifically useful for the felt quality of sleep rather than its architecture.
Honest grade: limited to moderate, and only for subjective sleep quality. Anything stronger is overselling it.
Probably both, and the split does not much matter in practice. A warm, caffeine-free drink taken at a consistent time, in dimmer light, away from screens, is a legitimate sleep cue on its own. It tells the body the day is closing. Apigenin may add a gentle calming nudge on top of that cue. Trying to disentangle the two in your own experience is difficult and, frankly, unnecessary. If a nightly cup of chamomile helps you feel settled and you rate your sleep as better, that is a reasonable thing to keep, whatever share the chemistry is contributing.
Where honesty helps is in setting expectations. If you are drinking chamomile hoping to fall asleep dramatically faster or to sleep two hours longer, you will likely be disappointed, and you might wrongly conclude that "natural" sleep aids do not work. If you are drinking it to wind down and to nudge how rested you feel, you are using it for what the evidence supports.
If chamomile is part of your evening, a few practical points make it work better.
Use a single cup in the wind-down hour, roughly 30 to 60 minutes before bed. Drinking it right at lights-out risks a night-time bathroom trip, which undoes the point. Regulators register a tea dose of around 1.5 to 4 grams of dried flower per cup, and there is no evidence that drinking far more produces a proportionally stronger effect [3].
Treat it as the last step of a routine, not a standalone fix. The ritual is part of the benefit, so pair the tea with the other unglamorous levers: consistent timing, dimmer light, a screen curfew. Chamomile complements those; it does not replace them.
If you want a more consistent, measured dose of the active compound, a standardised extract delivers more apigenin than a weak tea, and most of the positive sleep-quality data comes from extracts. But you trade the ritual and the warmth for consistency, so choose based on what you actually want from it.
And do not expect it to fix insomnia. Persistent trouble sleeping, difficulty falling or staying asleep most nights over weeks, is worth raising with a clinician rather than self-managing with tea. Chamomile is a gentle wind-down aid, not a treatment for a sleep disorder.
Chamomile's safety record is genuinely one of the better ones in the sleep aisle. It has a clean liver profile, with no convincing link to liver injury despite very widescale use, and regulators consider the tea likely safe in ordinary amounts [3][4]. That is worth stating plainly, because it is a real advantage over some other sleep herbs.
Two cautions still matter and should not be buried. First, allergy. People sensitive to ragweed, and to related daisy-family plants such as marigolds, chrysanthemums and daisies, can cross-react to chamomile. Reported reactions range from mild to, in a documented case series, immediate and occasionally life-threatening [5]. If you have a known ragweed or daisy-family allergy, chamomile is not the herb to try casually.
Second, warfarin. There is a published case report of a serious bleeding episode in a woman on warfarin after she used chamomile tea and lotion, and chamomile contains coumarin constituents that offer a plausible mechanism [6]. It is a single case, not a proven high-frequency interaction, but if you take warfarin it is a reason to check with your prescriber rather than assume a herbal tea is automatically fine. Pregnant, breastfeeding, or on medication? Check with a healthcare professional first. Regulators note that the safety of chamomile tea in pregnancy is reasonably established for the standard infusion, but concentrated extracts and tinctures are not recommended, and little is firmly known, so advice first is the sensible default [3].
