Cut your finger and watch what happens over the next hour. The skin around the cut reddens and warms as blood vessels widen. It swells slightly as fluid leaks into the tissue. It throbs, because the same chemicals that recruit repair also sensitise the nerves. Within a day the area is walled off, cleaned out by immune cells, and the rebuild has begun. Every one of those signs, the redness, heat, swelling and pain that physicians have described for two thousand years, is inflammation doing its job.

This is the part the wellness conversation tends to skip. Inflammation has been recast as a villain, a thing to be reduced, fought and neutralised, when the biology says the opposite: inflammation is repair. It is one of the most sophisticated defence and healing responses the body owns, and without it a splinter could kill you. The real problem is narrower and stranger than "too much inflammation." It is inflammation that will not switch off.

Two things are true at once. First, the biology of inflammation is rock solid, and reducing chronic inflammation is a reasonable goal. Second, most products sold as anti-inflammatory rest on thin evidence. The typical study shows a modest change in a blood marker such as C-reactive protein over a few weeks, in a small sample, with no demonstration that it changes how anyone actually feels or fares over time. A shifted marker is a hypothesis, not an outcome. Grading the single-supplement anti-inflammatory category honestly, the evidence for meaningful benefit is weak, and the strongest claims are usually the least supported.

What does have better evidence is unglamorous and free or cheap. Dietary patterns high in vegetables, fruit, pulses, whole grains, oily fish and olive oil are consistently associated with lower inflammatory markers, while diets dominated by ultra-processed food and excess energy raise them. The key phrase is pattern: the effect belongs to the whole way of eating, not to a single "anti-inflammatory" hero food. Add adequate sleep, regular movement, not smoking, and reducing excess body fat, and you have addressed the actual drivers of the chronic version. None of that fits on a supplement label, which is precisely why the label reaches for a single ingredient instead.

What This Means for You

The practical takeaways follow directly from the biology.

Do not try to suppress acute inflammation for its own sake. If you are healing from an injury or fighting an infection, that response is working for you. Blanket, aggressive suppression can impair healing and defence, which is one reason long-term high-dose anti-inflammatory drug use carries real risk. Match the intervention to the situation.

For the chronic, low-grade kind, work the drivers, not the marker. Sleep, body composition, movement, not smoking and overall diet pattern are the levers with genuine evidence. They are also the ones no product can sell you in a bottle.

Read "anti-inflammatory" claims sceptically. Ask what the study actually measured. A change in C-reactive protein over four weeks in thirty people is interesting but not proof of benefit. Be especially wary of any single ingredient promising to "fight inflammation" as if that were a settled, desirable goal.

Think about resolution, not just reduction. The raw materials for pro-resolving molecules come partly from dietary fats, which is one honest reason a sensible intake of oily fish sits in the evidence-supported column, though even there the outcome data are more modest than the marketing.
