Magnesium Glycinate

mineral

Evidence tier: limited

In plain terms

Magnesium glycinate is magnesium bound to glycine, an amino acid. It is one of the forms of magnesium sold as a supplement.

How it works

Magnesium bound to two glycine molecules. Once absorbed it acts as magnesium does: a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems and a damper of excitatory NMDA signalling in the nervous system. The glycine partner changes tolerability, not what magnesium does.

What the evidence says

Research on this exact form of magnesium is small, and most of what is known about it comes from research on magnesium in general.

Dose and timing

200 to 350 mg of elemental magnesium a day (US supplemental limit 350 mg). The trial used 250 mg; the PlantRx serving of 3 capsules gives 275 mg. Read the elemental figure: pure bisglycinate is about 14 percent magnesium.

Keep total magnesium from supplements at 350 mg a day or less. If you take levothyroxine, a bisphosphonate, or a fluoroquinolone or tetracycline antibiotic, leave four hours between them and magnesium glycinate.

Safety

The US upper limit for magnesium from supplements is 350 mg a day for adults, including in pregnancy and while breastfeeding, and magnesium from food does not count towards it. Too much magnesium loosens the bowels. If that happens, take less. Do not take a magnesium supplement if you have reduced kidney function without asking your doctor first. Healthy kidneys clear the excess. Impaired ones do not. If you take levothyroxine, a bisphosphonate, or a fluoroquinolone or tetracycline antibiotic, leave four hours between them and magnesium glycinate.
