Ingredients

How to prepare

1. Cut one outer leaf from the aloe plant close to the base using a clean knife. 2. Stand the leaf upright in a glass for 10–15 minutes. This allows the yellow latex (aloin) to drain from the cut end. Aloin can irritate skin — draining it is important. 3. Rinse the affected skin area with cool water and gently pat dry. Do not apply to broken skin or open wounds. 4. Slice off the serrated edges of the leaf, then cut the leaf in half lengthways to expose the clear gel inside. 5. Scoop out the clear gel with a spoon, or press the cut surface directly onto the affected skin area. 6. Apply a generous layer of gel to the affected area and allow to air-dry. Do not cover with plastic wrap — the gel needs air contact to work. 7. Reapply every 2–4 hours for burns and sunburns, or 2–3 times daily for general skin irritation. Keep the remaining leaf wrapped in clingfilm in the refrigerator for up to one week.

Why it works

Aloe vera gel contains a compound called acemannan that directly stimulates skin cell regeneration and collagen production. It also contains natural enzyme inhibitors that reduce pain in the same way ibuprofen works, and antimicrobial compounds that reduce the risk of infection while the skin heals.

Time to effect

Accelerated healing, clinical trials show ~9 days shorter healing time for minor burns versus standard dressings

Not right for

Not appropriate for third-degree burns, deep wounds, or infected burns, these require immediate medical care. Also not suitable for known aloe or Liliaceae plant allergy. Will not prevent scarring after severe burns.

What the evidence says

A 2007 systematic review of 4 randomised controlled trials found aloe vera preparations shortened first- and second-degree burn healing time by approximately 9 days compared to conventional dressings (p<0.006). Fresh aloe gel outperformed silver sulfadiazine cream in a 2008 clinical comparison.
