Ingredients

How to prepare

1. Measure 300–600mg of standardised ashwagandha root extract powder or open a capsule. 2. Warm 200ml of milk (or plant milk) to drinking temperature — not boiling. 3. Whisk the ashwagandha powder into the warm milk until fully dissolved. Some grittiness is normal with loose powder. 4. Add honey if desired and stir well. 5. Take once daily, ideally in the evening with food. Taking it with food reduces the likelihood of mild stomach upset in sensitive individuals. 6. Take consistently for at least 6–8 weeks to experience the full cortisol-reducing effect. Most people notice improved stress resilience within 2–4 weeks.

Why it works

Ashwagandha contains compounds called withanolides that recalibrate the brain's stress response system, reducing how much cortisol your body releases when under pressure. It doesn't sedate you or mask symptoms, it gradually lowers your baseline stress reactivity at a hormonal level.

Time to effect

Significant cortisol reduction and improved stress resilience after 6 to 8 weeks of daily use

Not right for

Not the right choice for acute anxiety or panic attacks, it builds resilience slowly over weeks rather than providing immediate relief. If you have an autoimmune condition, thyroid disorder, or are pregnant, consult your doctor before use. Also not suitable for people who need to stay alert (it can cause mild drowsiness in some people).

What the evidence says

In a 2019 double-blind RCT of 60 adults, 240mg of standardised ashwagandha extract taken daily for 60 days reduced serum cortisol by 22.2% (versus 4.4% in the placebo group) with p<0.0001 statistical significance.
