Astragalus membranaceus is a foundational adaptogenic herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine with well-characterised immunomodulatory polysaccharides (APS). It upregulates innate immunity while modulating Th1/Th2 balance, reducing the allergic Th2 overactivation that drives hayfever and asthma. Best used preventively before allergy season begins.
1. For allergy prevention: start astragalus 4–6 weeks before your known allergy season. Preventive use is far more effective than reactive use. 2. Standardised extract: 500mg twice daily with meals. Traditional decoction: simmer 6–9g dried root in 500ml water for 20–30 minutes, drink twice daily. 3. Astragalus has a mild pleasant flavour — it is one of the most palatable herbal teas. Add dried astragalus slices to soups or broths for daily tonic use in TCM tradition. 4. Continue throughout allergy season and for 2–4 weeks after peak season ends for sustained immune regulation. 5. Do NOT use if on immunosuppressant medications (cyclosporine, tacrolimus, methotrexate) or if you have had an organ transplant. 6. Astragalus is generally very well tolerated for long-term use — it is a tonic herb, not an acute herb.
APS polysaccharides shift Th1/Th2 balance, reducing allergic Th2 cytokines (IL-4, IL-5, IL-13)
Full allergy season protection with 4 to 6 weeks lead-in
Not the right fit if any of these apply to you: organ transplant, immunosuppressant medication, active acute infection. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist or GP first.
