Astragalus membranaceus root is a foundational Qi tonic in TCM and a validated immunomodulator, astragalosides stimulate natural killer cell activity, T-lymphocyte proliferation, and interferon production, building immune resilience over time.
1. TEA DECOCTION: Simmer 15g dried astragalus root slices in 1 litre of water for 30 minutes. Strain and drink 2–3 cups throughout the day. Can be re-simmered with fresh water for a second extraction. 2. SOUP/BROTH METHOD (traditional): Add 3–4 large dried astragalus root slices directly to chicken soup, bone broth, or vegetable broth during cooking. Simmer for at least 30 minutes. Remove slices before serving. 3. SUPPLEMENT: If using capsule extract, 500mg standardized extract twice daily with food. Polysaccharide-standardized (40% ASP) extracts are preferred. 4. Astragalus is a tonic herb — effects build over weeks and months of consistent use. Optimal as a daily preventive during immune-vulnerable seasons (autumn/winter) rather than as an acute treatment.
Fuller benefits typically build over 2 to 4 weeks of consistent daily use.
Not the right fit if any of these apply to you: autoimmune conditions, organ transplant, immunosuppressant therapy. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist or GP first.
Astragalus is a deep immune tonic, unlike echinacea which spikes immune activity acutely, astragalus builds the immune system's infrastructure over weeks and months. It is best used as a long-term preventive, not during active illness.
Take daily in the morning with food over a sustained period of 8 to 12 weeks. Reduce or pause during acute illness with fever.
