German chamomile tea helps you fall asleep faster by calming overactive brain activity. Backed by clinical research. Simple 8-minute preparation.
1. Bring water to just off the boil (90–95°C). If using boiling water, let it sit for 30 seconds. 2. Add 2 teaspoons of dried chamomile flowers to a mug or infuser. 3. Pour hot water over the chamomile and cover the mug with a saucer or small plate to trap the volatile oils. 4. Steep for 5 minutes. Longer steeping increases bitterness without increasing the apigenin content meaningfully. 5. Strain into a clean mug. Drink slowly 30–45 minutes before your intended sleep time.
Chamomile contains a compound called apigenin that binds to the same calming receptors in your brain targeted by mild sedatives, but much more gently. It dials down neuronal activity without the grogginess or dependency risk of prescription sleep aids.
Effects deepen with consistent nightly use over 1 to 2 weeks
May not help if your sleep difficulty is driven by anxiety disorder, sleep apnoea, chronic pain, or medication side effects. Also less effective for waking in the middle of the night versus difficulty falling asleep.
In a 2017 RCT of 60 elderly patients with chronic insomnia, chamomile extract (270mg twice daily) significantly improved Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores and reduced nighttime awakenings compared to placebo over 28 days (p<0.05).

Validated in a 2017 randomised controlled trial of 60 elderly patients; also recognised by the European Medicines Agency for mild sleep disorders.
