Ceylon Cinnamon Blood Sugar Tea

Category: Metabolic

Cinnamon is one of the most accessible blood glucose support tools, it's a kitchen spice with genuine mechanistic and clinical backing. Ceylon cinnamon (true cinnamon) is the variety to use for daily supplementation, it contains only trace amounts of coumarin unlike cassia cinnamon (the common supermarket variety), which can cause liver damage if taken in large amounts daily. Effect size is moderate and most consistent in pre-diabetic ranges.

Ingredients

How to prepare

1. Source Ceylon cinnamon — check the label specifically for 'Cinnamomum verum' or 'Ceylon'. Standard supermarket cinnamon is almost always cassia, which is not safe for daily therapeutic use. 2. Add 1 cinnamon stick (or 1-2 teaspoons of powder) to 250ml of near-boiling water. Steep for 10-15 minutes. 3. Drink with or just before a meal — particularly meals containing carbohydrates. Timing relative to meals improves post-meal glucose response. 4. Aim for 1-2 cups daily for blood glucose support. Consistent daily use over 4-12 weeks produces the most measurable effects. 5. Alternatively, stir 1/2 teaspoon of Ceylon cinnamon powder into porridge, yoghurt, or a smoothie with your meals — same benefit. 6. If you take diabetes medication, note that cinnamon may have an additive glucose-lowering effect — monitor for any symptoms of low blood sugar.

Why it works

Cinnamon type-A proanthocyanidins activate insulin receptor kinase and inhibit phosphotyrosine phosphatase, potentiating insulin receptor signalling and increasing glucose uptake without additional insulin. Cinnamaldehyde also upregulates GLUT4 expression. Khan A et al. (2003) RCT n=60 (T2DM): cinnamon 1-6g/day for 40 days reduced fasting blood glucose 18-29%, triglycerides 23-30%, LDL 7-27%. Davis PA & Yokoyama W (2011) meta-analysis confirmed consistent fasting glucose reduction. Effects most reliable in pre-diabetic range; less consistent in overt T2DM with good pharmacotherapy. Ceylon variety essential for safety, cassia coumarin is hepatotoxic.

Time to effect

Best used as needed for acute relief; with regular use, supportive benefits build over 1 to 2 weeks.

Not right for

Not the right fit if any of these apply to you: severe diabetes on insulin without medical supervision. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist or GP first.

In simple terms

Ceylon cinnamon improves insulin sensitivity, it activates insulin receptor signalling in cells, making them more responsive to insulin so less is needed to process glucose. It is one of the most researched plant compounds for blood sugar management.
