Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic oral hygiene practice. Coconut oil is particularly effective due to its high lauric acid content which saponifies in the oral environment, disrupting bacterial and biofilm lipid bilayers. Multiple trials show significant reductions in Streptococcus mutans and gingivitis scores.
1. First thing in the morning, before eating or brushing — take 1 tablespoon (15ml) of virgin coconut oil into the mouth. 2. Gently swish and pull the oil between teeth for 10–20 minutes. The oil thins as it warms — this is normal. 3. Do NOT swallow the oil — it will contain mobilised bacteria and biofilm. 4. Spit the used oil into a bin or tissue — not down the sink, as coconut oil solidifies in cold pipes. 5. Rinse mouth with warm water, then brush teeth as normal. 6. Perform daily for at least 2–4 weeks to see meaningful reduction in plaque and gingivitis.
Lauric acid saponification disrupts bacterial lipid bilayers; mechanical swishing dislodges biofilm from tooth surfaces and gum pockets
Significant gingivitis and plaque reduction in 3 to 4 weeks
Not the right fit if any of these apply to you: young children who cannot reliably spit. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist or GP first.
