Ingredients

How to prepare

1. Fill the bath with lukewarm water (33–36°C). Hot water aggravates itching and strips skin oils — keep it comfortably warm, not hot. 2. Run the water from the tap and pour the colloidal oatmeal directly under the running stream to help it disperse evenly. 3. Stir the water — it should turn milky white and feel slightly slippery. This is the colloidal suspension you want. 4. Soak for 15–20 minutes. Gently swish the water over itchy areas — do not scrub. 5. Pat (do not rub) skin dry with a soft towel immediately after getting out of the bath. 6. Apply a fragrance-free moisturiser within 3 minutes of patting dry — this seals in the oat protective film while skin is still slightly damp.

Why it works

Avenanthramides in oats block histamine release at the skin level, stopping the itch signal at its source. Beta-glucans form a protective barrier film that locks in moisture.

Time to effect

Skin barrier repair over 1 to 2 weeks with regular use

Not right for

Must use lukewarm, not hot water. Not a replacement for prescription treatment in severe eczema flares.

What the evidence says

Colloidal oatmeal holds FDA Category I (safe and effective) OTC skin protectant status, one of the strongest regulatory endorsements any topical natural ingredient can have.

How we read the research
