Category: Liver Support
Dandelion root has been used across European, Chinese, and Ayurvedic traditions as a liver and digestive tonic. Its bitter sesquiterpene lactones stimulate bile flow from the gallbladder, improving fat emulsification. The high inulin content (up to 40% of the dry root) feeds beneficial gut bacteria, supporting the gut-liver axis.
1. Place 1–2 tsp of dried dandelion root in a saucepan with 250 mL water. 2. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cover for 10–15 minutes (a decoction, not infusion — root requires heat extraction). 3. Strain and drink warm before a meal or first thing in the morning on an empty stomach for maximum bile-stimulating effect. 4. Drink 1–3 cups daily. A slight bitterness is normal and indicates active bitter compounds are present. 5. Use as a 4–6 week seasonal tonic, then take a break. Not for continuous indefinite use.
Dandelion root's cholagogue effect is mediated by sesquiterpene lactones (taraxacin, taraxacerin), which stimulate bile secretion from the gallbladder into the small intestine. Increased bile flow improves emulsification and absorption of dietary fats, reducing post-meal bloating. Dandelion root also contains up to 40% inulin, a prebiotic fructooligosaccharide that selectively stimulates Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium in the colon, supporting the gut-liver axis.
Best used as needed for acute relief; with regular use, supportive benefits build over 1 to 2 weeks.
Not the right fit if any of these apply to you: active gallstones, kidney disease, Asteraceae allergy, FODMAP-sensitive individuals (caution). When in doubt, check with your pharmacist or GP first.
Dandelion root stimulates bile production and flow, helping your liver process fats and toxins more efficiently. It is a traditional "digestive bitter", the bitter taste itself triggers your digestive system to prepare for food.
