Devil's Claw Joint & Arthritis Relief

Category: Musculoskeletal

Devil's claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) is a root from the Kalahari, used traditionally to support comfortable movement. Its studied constituent is harpagoside. If back or joint pain is persistent or severe, that is a conversation for a doctor rather than a herb.

Ingredients

How to prepare

1. Take 600mg standardized devil's claw extract (2–3% harpagoside) two to three times daily with meals — total harpagoside intake 36–54mg/day. 2. Allow 4–8 weeks for effects on arthritis pain to build. Anti-inflammatory botanical effects are cumulative — do not judge efficacy before 4 weeks. 3. For acute flares, the dose can be temporarily increased to 3 x 600mg daily. Return to 2 x 600mg for maintenance once pain is controlled. 4. Devil's claw mildly lowers blood pressure — monitor if on antihypertensives. It may also affect stomach acid; take with food. Discontinue 2 weeks before surgery.

Time to effect

Fuller benefits typically build over 2 to 4 weeks of consistent daily use.

Not right for

Not the right fit if any of these apply to you: peptic ulcers, gallstones, pregnancy, heart conditions. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist or GP first.

In simple terms

Devil's Claw contains harpagoside, which has strong evidence for reducing lower back pain and osteoarthritis pain, it works similarly to NSAIDs by blocking prostaglandin production but without the stomach-damaging effects.

When to take it

Take between meals on an empty stomach for best harpagoside absorption. Allow 4 to 8 weeks for full anti-inflammatory effect in chronic joint conditions.
