Elderberry syrup cuts cold duration by 2 days and flu by 4 days when started early. Backed by clinical trials. Home recipe with dried elderberries.
1. Combine dried elderberries, water, and optional ginger and cinnamon in a medium saucepan. 2. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 45 minutes, until the liquid has reduced by roughly half. 3. Remove from heat and allow to cool for 20–30 minutes. Mash the berries with the back of a spoon to release remaining liquid. 4. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean bowl. Press the berries firmly to extract all juice. Discard the pulp. 5. Allow the liquid to cool to below 40°C (warm but not hot to the touch). Stir in the honey until fully dissolved. 6. Pour into a sterilised glass jar or bottle and refrigerate. The syrup keeps for 2–3 weeks refrigerated.
Elderberry's deep purple pigments (anthocyanins) physically block cold and flu viruses from attaching to your respiratory cells, a similar mechanism to antiviral medications. At the same time, they help your immune system mount a faster response to infections that do take hold.
Consistent daily use during cold season provides ongoing preventive benefit
Not a replacement for flu vaccination, which prevents infection rather than shortening it. If you have an autoimmune condition on immunosuppressive therapy, consult your doctor, elderberry stimulates the immune system. For bacterial infections like strep throat or pneumonia, elderberry has no direct benefit.
A 2004 RCT of 60 influenza patients found elderberry syrup (15ml four times daily) reduced influenza duration by an average of 4 days compared to placebo. A 2019 meta-analysis of 14 studies confirmed substantial reduction in upper respiratory symptom duration and severity.
acute
Confirmed in a 2019 meta-analysis of 14 clinical studies; individual trials showed cold duration reduced by 2 days and flu duration reduced by 4 days versus placebo.
