Eucalyptus's 1,8-cineole provides strong bronchodilator and expectorant activity, effective for adult congestion and productive cough. Kept brain-only because the same compound that makes it effective also causes serious respiratory depression in children under 5 and can trigger bronchospasm in asthma. The Thyme Congestion Steam is the safe public alternative for the general library.
1. ADULTS ONLY. Do not use for children under 5 — 1,8-cineole in eucalyptus can cause respiratory depression in young children. Do not use if you have asthma — may trigger bronchospasm. 2. Add 2–3 drops of eucalyptus oil to a large heat-proof bowl. 3. Pour 500 mL of freshly boiled water (rested 60 seconds) into the bowl. 4. Create a tent with a large towel over your head and the bowl. Close your eyes. 5. Breathe deeply through the nose for 5–10 minutes. Lift the towel if too hot. 6. Repeat up to 2× daily. Discontinue if breathing worsens or any tightness develops.
1,8-Cineole bronchodilates, stimulates mucociliary clearance, and kills airway microbes, powerful adult respiratory relief that requires pre-screening for age and asthma.
3 to 5 days during respiratory illness
BRAIN-ONLY: Not for children under 5, asthma, or internal use. For public users, Thyme Congestion Steam (library) provides a safer alternative.
Eucalyptus 1,8-cineole has EMA well-established use status and RCT evidence for respiratory conditions, kept brain-only due to child safety, not evidence concerns.
acute
EMA well-established use for adult upper respiratory catarrh. 1,8-cineole RCT data in COPD (Juergens 2004). Public alternative: thyme-steam-inhalation.
