Evening primrose oil (EPO) is one of the richest plant sources of GLA, an omega-6 fatty acid and direct precursor to anti-inflammatory prostaglandin E1 (PGE1). PMS symptoms are partly driven by an imbalance between pro- and anti-inflammatory prostaglandins, EPO shifts this balance favourably.
1. Start with 1g daily (one 1000mg capsule) with a meal. Increase to 2–3g daily after 1 week if needed for stronger PMS relief. 2. Take continuously throughout the month — not just during PMS week. GLA requires 4–8 weeks to build up as PGE1 in tissues. 3. Check the label for actual GLA content. A 1000mg EPO capsule should contain at least 80–90mg GLA. 4. Breast tenderness specifically responds well — often within 1–2 menstrual cycles. 5. If you take anticoagulants (warfarin, aspirin), discuss with your doctor — EPO has mild blood-thinning properties. 6. If you have epilepsy and take phenothiazine antipsychotics, avoid high-dose EPO.
GLA converts to PGE1 opposing pro-inflammatory and pro-cramp prostaglandins PGF2-alpha and PGE2
Full PMS relief typically after 2 to 3 menstrual cycles
Not the right fit if any of these apply to you: pregnancy, epilepsy on phenothiazines, planned surgery. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist or GP first.
