Feverfew for migraine prevention: how parthenolide blocks vasogenic migraine triggers, Cochrane review evidence and daily protocol.

Traditional uses & benefits

Ingredients

How to prepare

1. Take 50–100 mg standardised feverfew extract (0.2% parthenolide) daily with food. 2. Use consistently every day — this is a preventive protocol, not on-demand. Missing doses reduces effectiveness. 3. Allow 1–3 months before evaluating effectiveness. Many people notice reduced attack frequency after 4–8 weeks. 4. Do not stop abruptly — taper the dose gradually over 2 weeks to avoid post-feverfew rebound headache and anxiety. 5. If taking blood thinners (warfarin, aspirin, DOACs), consult your doctor before starting — parthenolide has antiplatelet activity.

Why it works

Parthenolide blocks platelet serotonin release and thromboxane synthesis, two of the main triggers of migraine vasospasm, taken daily before attacks occur.

Time to effect

Full benefit at 3 months of consistent daily use

Not right for

Not for stopping a migraine once it has started. Not for pregnancy or blood thinner users. Must be taken daily, not on demand. Do not stop abruptly.

What the evidence says

In Murphy et al. (1988), daily raw feverfew leaf produced a 24% reduction in migraine attack frequency and significant improvement in headache-free days compared to placebo.
