Panax Ginseng Energy & Vitality Tonic

Category: Energy

Panax ginseng (Korean ginseng) has accumulated one of the most extensive research profiles of any adaptogenic herb. Its ginsenosides modulate the HPA stress axis, support mitochondrial energy production, and enhance neurotransmitter signalling. It works best taken in cycles, 8 to 12 weeks on, 4 weeks off, to prevent tolerance. Note: this is Panax ginseng, which is different from Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus).

How to prepare

1. CHECK FIRST: If you take warfarin, MAOIs, or diabetes medications (insulin, metformin), speak to your doctor or pharmacist before starting ginseng. 2. For tea: place 3 g dried ginseng root (or 5–6 thin slices) in 500 mL water, bring to a gentle boil, then simmer covered for 30 minutes. Strain and divide into 2 cups. 3. Drink one cup in the morning and one in the early afternoon. Avoid taking after 3pm — ginseng's stimulating properties can delay sleep onset. 4. Use for 8–12 weeks, then take a 4-week break before resuming. This cycling approach prevents desensitisation. 5. Start with a lower dose for the first week if sensitive to stimulants — headache and GI upset can occur when starting at full dose.

Why it works

Panax ginseng ginsenosides (Rb1, Rg1, Rc, Re, Rd) are the primary actives, a structurally diverse group of triterpenoid saponins. They modulate the HPA axis (reducing cortisol overshoot in stress), enhance mitochondrial ATP production, and stimulate dopamine and serotonin pathways. Barton DL et al. (2010) RCT (n=364 cancer patients): Wisconsin ginseng 2 g/day significantly reduced fatigue scores vs placebo over 8 weeks. Ellis JM & Reddy P (2002) RCT: Korean red ginseng improved cognitive performance and reaction time. Ginsenoside Rg1 specifically enhances acetylcholine release in the hippocampus, supporting memory.

Time to effect

Fuller benefits typically build over 2 to 4 weeks of consistent daily use.

Not right for

Not the right fit if any of these apply to you: MAOI users, uncontrolled hypertension, pregnancy, under 18. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist or GP first.

In simple terms

Panax ginseng boosts energy by improving how your mitochondria use oxygen, it gives you real cellular energy, not a caffeine-like spike. It also supports cognitive function and stress resilience simultaneously.
