Honey Oral Antibacterial Rinse

Category: Oral Health

Honey, particularly Manuka honey (Leptospermum scoparium), has potent antimicrobial properties relevant to oral health. Manuka's high methylglyoxal (MGO) content and low pH create an inhospitable environment for oral pathogens including Streptococcus mutans (tooth decay), Porphyromonas gingivalis (periodontitis), and Candida albicans (oral thrush). It also accelerates wound healing in oral ulcers through stimulation of fibroblast migration.

How to prepare

1. For mouth ulcers: apply Manuka honey (UMF 10+ or MGO 250+) directly to the ulcer using a clean cotton swab. Leave for 10–15 minutes before rinsing. 2. Apply 2–3 times daily for ulcer healing. Most ulcers respond within 3–5 days of consistent honey application. 3. For general oral antibacterial use: hold 1 teaspoon of Manuka honey in the mouth, swishing gently around teeth and gums for 3–5 minutes. Repeat daily after oil pulling or brushing. 4. UMF 10+ (or MGO 250+) is the minimum therapeutic grade for antimicrobial activity. Regular supermarket honey lacks sufficient methylglyoxal for reliable antimicrobial effect. 5. Diabetics: honey is absorbed when swallowed — monitor blood glucose. Topical application to oral mucosa has minimal systemic absorption.

Why it works

MGO and defensin-1 inhibit S. mutans biofilm and Candida; hydrogen peroxide disrupts bacterial membranes; moist occlusion promotes mucosal healing

Time to effect

Ulcer healing in 3 to 5 days of twice-daily application

Not right for

Not the right fit if any of these apply to you: infants under 12 months, honey allergy. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist or GP first.
