Honey & Thyme Throat Syrup, Natural Cough and Sore Throat Relief

Category: Respiratory

Honey and thyme throat syrup: a clinically-backed natural remedy for sore throats and productive cough, with step-by-step recipe.

Traditional uses & benefits

Ingredients

How to prepare

1. Steep 2 tsp dried thyme in 120 mL of water just off boil for 10 minutes, covered tightly. 2. Strain the thyme infusion and allow to cool until just warm — below 40°C (not hot to the touch). This temperature preserves honey's enzymatic activity. 3. Stir in 2 tbsp raw honey until fully dissolved. 4. Add 1 tsp fresh lemon juice and stir. 5. Take 1 tablespoon (15 mL) every 3–4 hours while symptoms persist. Swallow slowly to maximise throat contact time. 6. Store in a sealed jar in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours. Shake or stir before each use. Discard after 48 hours.

Why it works

Thymol disrupts bacterial cell membranes and loosens mucus; honey coats the throat, suppresses cough reflex, and generates continuous antimicrobial hydrogen peroxide.

Time to effect

2 to 3 days for infection symptoms to resolve

Not right for

Cannot be used for infants under 12 months. May not be appropriate for productive cough requiring antibiotic treatment (bacterial pneumonia, strep throat), see a doctor if symptoms worsen after 3 days.

What the evidence says

In Paul et al. (2007), buckwheat honey was rated significantly better than dextromethorphan (standard OTC cough suppressant) by parents for their children's nocturnal cough severity and sleep quality.

When to take it

How we read the research

Both ingredients are backed by randomised clinical trials. Thyme was equivalent to an OTC bronchosecretolytic (2006, n=361). Honey outperformed dextromethorphan for children's cough (2007, n=105).
