Traditional uses & benefits

Ingredients

How to prepare

1. Bring 200 mL water to just off boil (90°C). Do not use a full rolling boil — high temperature degrades volatile citronellal and linalool. 2. Place 2 tsp dried lemon balm leaf in a covered cup or small teapot. 3. Pour hot water over leaves and cover immediately. 4. Steep for 5–10 minutes covered. Shorter steep (5 min) for a lighter flavour; 10 minutes for higher rosmarinic acid extraction. 5. Strain and drink warm. Add honey if desired. 6. For acute stress relief: drink 1–2 cups as needed. For sleep wind-down: drink 1 cup 30–60 minutes before bed. Maximum 3 cups per day.

Why it works

Rosmarinic acid slows the breakdown of GABA (your brain's calming neurotransmitter), gently raising its levels without the sedation or dependence risk of pharmaceutical options.

Time to effect

2 to 4 weeks for cumulative calming effect

Not right for

Not a substitute for therapy or medication in diagnosed anxiety disorders. May interact with thyroid medications, check with your doctor if you take levothyroxine.

What the evidence says
