Traditional uses & benefits

Ingredients

How to prepare

1. Measure 1 level teaspoon (approximately 3 g) of lion's mane fruiting body powder. 2. Heat water or plant milk to 80–90°C (not boiling — excessive heat may degrade some polysaccharides). 3. Add the powder to your cup and pour in 200 mL of warm liquid. 4. Whisk or stir vigorously for 30 seconds — lion's mane powder does not dissolve easily but should disperse evenly. 5. Add sweetener if desired and drink immediately. 6. Take daily, consistently. The Mori 2009 trial used 3g/day for 16 weeks. Allow 4–8 weeks before assessing cognitive effects. Benefits are not maintained after stopping — plan ongoing use.

Why it works

Hericenones in lion's mane fruiting body stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF) production, a protein essential for neuron maintenance and new synaptic connections.

Time to effect

4 to 12 weeks of daily use

Not right for

Not a quick fix, benefits require 4 to 12 weeks and are lost when you stop. Not studied in people without cognitive concerns or under age 50.

What the evidence says

In Mori et al. (2009), elderly patients with mild cognitive impairment taking 3g/day lion's mane for 16 weeks scored significantly higher on cognitive function scales than placebo (p<0.01). Scores returned to baseline within 4 weeks of stopping.

When to take it

How we read the research

Backed by a double-blind clinical trial (30 patients, 16 weeks) showing significant cognitive improvement in mild cognitive impairment. One small trial, promising but not yet definitive.
