Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a Peruvian root vegetable used for energy and fertility for centuries at high altitude. Unlike many adaptogens, maca's libido-enhancing effect is specifically documented in RCTs, and crucially operates without altering testosterone or oestrogen levels, making it safe for hormone-sensitive populations.
1. Start with 1.5g (1.5 teaspoons) of gelatinised maca powder daily, mixed into a smoothie, porridge, or warm milk. Gelatinised form is easier to digest. 2. Increase to 3g daily after 1–2 weeks if well tolerated. 3g is the standard RCT dose for libido and energy. 3. Take in the morning — maca has mild energising properties. Avoid in the evening if sensitive to stimulants. 4. Allow 6–8 weeks for libido and stamina benefits. Maca's effect on the hypothalamic-pituitary axis takes time to establish. 5. For SSRI-related sexual dysfunction: 3g maca daily for 12 weeks has RCT evidence for significant improvement — this is one of the most evidence-supported natural interventions for this specific issue. 6. Maca does not alter hormone levels — it is safe for men with hormone-sensitive conditions and women taking hormonal medications.
