Magnesium Muscle Ease & Tension Protocol

Category: Musculoskeletal

Magnesium is an essential cofactor in over 300 enzymatic reactions and the primary intracellular calcium antagonist. Muscle contraction requires calcium; relaxation requires magnesium. Up to 45% of Western adults are magnesium-insufficient by dietary survey, and muscle cramps, tension, and nocturnal cramping are frequently the presenting symptoms.

How to prepare

1. Choose the right form: magnesium glycinate for cramps with sleep issues or anxiety, magnesium malate for cramps with fatigue, magnesium citrate for cramps with constipation. Avoid magnesium oxide — it has very poor bioavailability. 2. Take 300–400mg elemental magnesium daily, in the evening with food. Evening dosing supports muscle relaxation during sleep and reduces nocturnal cramps. 3. If GI upset occurs with citrate form: switch to glycinate or reduce dose to 150–200mg and build up over 2 weeks. 4. For athletes: consider splitting the dose — 150mg morning and 150–200mg evening — to support muscle recovery and reduce exercise-induced cramping throughout the day. 5. Results for nocturnal leg cramps and restless legs are typically noticeable within 1–2 weeks of consistent dosing. 6. Magnesium is best obtained from diet (leafy greens, nuts, seeds, legumes) — supplement as a reliable way to ensure consistent intake, not as a replacement for dietary sources.

Why it works

Physiological calcium antagonism reduces excessive muscle contraction; NMDA receptor stabilisation lowers motor neuron excitability

Time to effect

Full muscle tension normalisation in 4 to 6 weeks

Not right for

Not the right fit if any of these apply to you: significant kidney disease, hypermagnesaemia. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist or GP first.
