Pygeum Prostate & Bladder Support

Category: Men's Health

Pygeum africanum bark has been used in European phytotherapy for BPH for decades and is approved in France, Germany, and Italy for lower urinary tract symptoms. A 2002 Cochrane review of 18 trials (n=1,562) found men using pygeum were twice as likely to report symptom improvement vs placebo. Works through anti-inflammatory triterpenes AND improved bladder detrusor muscle contractility, a different mechanism to saw palmetto, making combination possible.

How to prepare

1. Take 100mg daily with a meal, or split into 50mg twice daily (morning and evening with food). 2. Allow 4-8 weeks before assessing benefit. Urinary frequency and nocturia typically improve first, followed by stream strength. 3. Pygeum can be used alongside saw palmetto — the mechanisms are complementary. If combining, discuss total daily dose with a healthcare provider. 4. Track nocturia episodes (nights woken to urinate) as your primary outcome measure — this is the most consistent responder to pygeum in clinical trials. 5. If possible, choose a product certified for sustainable sourcing — P. africanum is a protected species in several African countries.

Why it works

Pygeum's triterpenoids (ursolic acid, oleanolic acid) and ferulic acid esters exert anti-inflammatory effects on prostatic tissue, inhibiting growth factors (bFGF, EGF) responsible for BPH-related prostatic hyperplasia. Additionally, pygeum improves bladder detrusor muscle contractility, an action distinct from 5-ARIs, reducing residual urine volume. Ishani A et al. (2000) Cochrane review of 18 trials (n=1,562): men using pygeum were 2.1 times more likely to report improvement vs placebo. Nocturia reduced by 19%, peak urine flow increased by 23%, and residual urine volume reduced by 24%.

Time to effect

Fuller benefits typically build over 2 to 4 weeks of consistent daily use.

Not right for

Not the right fit if any of these apply to you: under 18, women. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist or GP first.

In simple terms

Pygeum africanum bark extract inhibits the growth factors that cause BPH-related prostate enlargement and directly reduces inflammatory prostaglandins in prostate tissue, improving urine flow and reducing nighttime urination.
