Salt water gargle for a sore throat: exactly how much salt, how long to gargle, how often, and the symptoms that mean you should see a doctor instead.
1. Dissolve 0.5 tsp of salt in 240 mL of warm water. Stir until the water is clear and no grains remain at the bottom. Undissolved salt does nothing and feels unpleasant. 2. Take a mouthful, tilt your head back, and gargle so the water moves at the back of the throat. You should hear it bubbling. 3. Keep gargling for about 15 seconds. This is the step most people cut short. A 2 second swill does not give the solution contact time with the inflamed tissue. 4. Spit it out. Do not swallow. Swallowing a hypertonic salt solution repeatedly is unnecessary and unpleasant, and matters more if you are on a salt restricted diet. 5. Repeat with the rest of the cup, in mouthfuls, until it is used up. 6. Do this 2 to 3 times daily while the throat is sore. Some sources go up to 4 times daily, which is reasonable. Make it fresh each time. 7. Track how long it has been going on. A sore throat that is not improving after about a week, or that is getting worse rather than better, needs a clinician rather than more gargling.
Warm salt water draws fluid out of swollen throat tissue by osmosis, which reduces the swelling and the pain that comes with it, and washes away mucus and irritants.
This does not shorten the illness. Most viral sore throats settle within a week. Beyond that, or if it worsens, see a doctor.
Not for young children who cannot reliably spit, not for anyone with swallowing difficulties, and not for a sore throat with breathing difficulty, drooling, severe one sided pain or neck swelling, which need urgent care. It will not treat strep throat and is not a substitute for antibiotics when they are indicated.
The proportions that clinical sources consistently give are half a teaspoon of salt in about 240 mL of warm water, gargled two to three times daily. Benefit is symptomatic relief of pain and irritation, not treatment of the underlying infection.
Best for an adult or older child with an ordinary viral sore throat who wants immediate, free relief using what is already in the kitchen, and who knows which symptoms mean they should stop and see a doctor instead.
acute
Long standing clinical advice from sources including Cleveland Clinic, supported by a clear physical mechanism, but with a thin randomised trial base which is why it is graded on traditional use rather than clinical proof.
