Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) is the primary female tonic herb in Ayurvedic medicine. Its steroidal saponins modulate oestrogen receptor activity while adaptogenic properties regulate the HPA axis and reduce stress-related hormonal disruption.
1. Choose a shatavari extract standardised for saponin content. 500mg of 10:1 extract is the effective therapeutic dose — take twice daily with meals. 2. For the traditional preparation, mix shatavari powder into warm milk with a small amount of ghee to aid fat-soluble saponin absorption. 3. Allow 4–8 weeks of consistent use before evaluating effects on cycle regularity or menopausal comfort — adaptogens require time to work. 4. If on HRT or oral contraceptives, consult your doctor before starting — phytoestrogenic activity may interact. 5. If breastfeeding: shatavari is traditionally used as a galactagogue (lactation support) and is generally considered safe.
