Slippery elm inner bark forms a viscous mucilage when mixed with water, this demulcent gel coats and soothes irritated mucous membranes in the throat, oesophagus, and bronchi, providing immediate relief from dry cough, throat irritation, and bronchial inflammation.
1. Mix 1 tablespoon slippery elm powder with 3 tablespoons of cold water to make a paste (prevents lumping). Then add 200ml warm water (not boiling — heat degrades mucilage). 2. Stir well and drink slowly — swallow in small sips so the mucilage coats the full length of the throat. Add honey and cinnamon to improve palatability. 3. Drink 2–4 times daily during acute throat or cough symptoms. For best coating effect, drink 30 minutes before eating and again before bed. 4. LOZENGE FORM: Slippery elm lozenges are a convenient alternative — dissolve slowly in the mouth for direct mucosal coating. Effective within minutes for acute throat soothing.
Best used as needed for acute relief; with regular use, supportive benefits build over 1 to 2 weeks.
Not the right fit if any of these apply to you: elm tree allergy, pregnancy (high dose). When in doubt, check with your pharmacist or GP first.
Slippery elm forms a thick gel when mixed with water, coating and soothing the entire digestive lining from mouth to gut. It is one of the few remedies that physically protects irritated tissue rather than just calming symptoms.
Mix with warm water and drink 20 minutes before meals to create a protective mucosal layer before food contact. Also effective before bed for overnight gut healing.
