Tea tree oil spot treatment for acne: how to dilute and apply tea tree at the clinically studied 5% concentration for safer acne relief.
1. SAFETY FIRST: Tea tree oil must ALWAYS be diluted before applying to skin. Never apply undiluted — it causes chemical burns and contact dermatitis in concentrated form. 2. Add 5 drops of tea tree oil to 1 tsp (5 mL) of carrier oil. Mix well. This creates a ~5% dilution — the clinically studied concentration for acne. 3. Cleanse and dry the target area thoroughly before application. 4. Using a clean cotton bud, apply a small amount of the diluted mixture directly to the spot or affected area only. Do not apply over the whole face. 5. Allow to absorb — do not rinse off. Apply once or twice daily. 6. For nail fungus: apply 25–50% dilution (stronger) to the nail and surrounding skin twice daily after washing and drying feet completely.
Terpinen-4-ol disrupts bacterial and fungal cell membranes on contact, effective against acne bacteria, dermatophytes, and MRSA at the concentrations used in clinical trials.

NEVER ingest. ALWAYS dilute before skin application. Not for internal ear, nose, or mouth use. Not a replacement for dermatologist care in cystic or severe acne.
In Carson et al. (2006), 5% tea tree gel matched pharmaceutical-grade 5% benzoyl peroxide for acne improvement while causing significantly less dryness and skin irritation.
acute
RCT (n=124) showed 5% tea tree gel equivalent to 5% benzoyl peroxide for acne with fewer adverse effects (Carson 2006). Nail fungus RCT confirmed benefit at 50% dilution (Satchell 2002).
