Thyme steam inhalation for congestion: how thymol clears nasal and chest congestion naturally, the family-safe alternative to eucalyptus steam.
1. Place 2–3 tsp fresh thyme (or 1–2 tsp dried) in a large heat-proof bowl. 2. Boil 500 mL of filtered water. Allow it to rest for 60 seconds before pouring — water at 70–80°C produces therapeutic steam without burn risk. 3. Pour the water over the thyme. It will immediately begin to steam and release thymol vapour. 4. Create a tent: drape a large towel over your head and the bowl to trap the steam. Close your eyes. 5. Breathe slowly through your nose for 5–10 minutes. If it becomes uncomfortably hot, lift the towel edge to let in cooler air. 6. Blow your nose gently afterwards. Repeat up to 2–3 times daily during congestion. Discontinue if symptoms worsen or persist beyond 5 days.
Thymol vapour relaxes bronchial smooth muscle, stimulates mucociliary clearance to move mucus out, and kills bacteria and fungi in the airways, three mechanisms in one steam.
Consistent relief over 3 to 5 days of use during a cold or respiratory infection
Not for severe asthma attacks or children under 2. Let water cool 60 seconds before use to prevent steam burns. Seek medical attention if symptoms worsen or do not improve in 5 days.
In Kemmerich et al. (2006), a thyme-based preparation was clinically equivalent to ambroxol, a standard pharmaceutical bronchosecretolytic drug, in reducing productive cough in acute bronchitis.
acute
Thyme preparations backed by RCT equivalent to pharmaceutical ambroxol (Kemmerich 2006, n=361). EMA well-established use for bronchitis and productive cough.
