Valerian Root Sleep Onset Protocol

Category: Sleep

Valerian root (Valeriana officinalis) reduces sleep latency, the time to fall asleep, through GABA-A receptor modulation by valerenic acid. Unlike synthetic sleep aids, valerian does not suppress REM sleep or cause morning grogginess at therapeutic doses.

Traditional uses & benefits

Ingredients

How to prepare

1. Take 300–600mg standardized valerian extract (0.8% valerenic acid) 30–60 minutes before intended sleep time. Start with 300mg to assess individual response. 2. Valerian requires 2–4 weeks of consistent nightly use to reach full efficacy — do not judge results from first-night experience. Many users notice full benefit only after 2 weeks. 3. Combine with sleep hygiene practices: dim lights 1 hour before bed, keep bedroom cool (18–20°C), no screens in the bedroom. Valerian amplifies good sleep hygiene, it does not replace it. 4. Discontinue gradually after extended use — do not stop abruptly after months of use. Taper dose over 1–2 weeks. Do not combine with alcohol, benzodiazepines, or other sedatives.

Time to effect

Fuller benefits typically build over 2 to 4 weeks of consistent daily use.

Not right for

Not the right fit if any of these apply to you: pregnancy, breastfeeding, children, liver disease, pre-surgery (48 hours). When in doubt, check with your pharmacist or GP first.

In simple terms

Valerian root is a calming herb that raises GABA levels in the brain, the same pathway as sleep medications, but gently. Most people find it eases them into sleep without morning grogginess.

When to take it

Take 30 to 60 minutes before your target bedtime. Allow 2 to 4 weeks of daily use for full effect.
