Vitex PMS & Menstrual Cycle Support

Category: Women's Health

Vitex agnus-castus acts directly on the pituitary dopamine receptors to reduce prolactin secretion, elevated prolactin in the luteal phase is a key driver of PMS symptoms including breast tenderness and mood swings. By normalising LH/FSH ratios, vitex also supports cycle regularity. This is a slow-acting remedy, benefits accumulate over 3 to 6 menstrual cycles of consistent use.

How to prepare

1. Take one vitex capsule in the morning, consistently every day — including through your period. Unlike many remedies, vitex is taken daily throughout the entire cycle, not just in the luteal phase. 2. Do not expect immediate results. Most women begin to notice benefit after the second or third cycle. Give it a full 3 months before assessing. 3. Track your symptoms each cycle on a simple calendar or app — this helps you see gradual improvement that can otherwise be missed cycle-to-cycle. 4. If you are on hormonal contraception, discuss with your doctor before starting vitex — potential interaction with the hormonal mechanism. 5. Do not use if you are taking dopamine-blocking medications (antipsychotics, metoclopramide) — vitex directly opposes their mechanism.

Why it works

Vitex acts as a D2 dopamine receptor agonist in the pituitary gland, reducing prolactin secretion. Elevated prolactin in the luteal phase causes premenstrual breast tenderness and worsens mood symptoms. Vitex also modulates LH (luteinising hormone) pulsatility, improving the progesterone-oestrogen ratio in the second half of the cycle. Schellenberg R (2001) RCT (n=178) found Ze 440 standardised extract significantly reduced overall PMS symptom scores including irritability, mood alteration, anger, headache, and breast fullness vs placebo (p<0.001). Effects are cumulative, increasing over 3 menstrual cycles.

Time to effect

Fuller benefits typically build over 2 to 4 weeks of consistent daily use.

Not right for

Not the right fit if any of these apply to you: pregnancy, hormone-sensitive cancers (breast, uterine, ovarian), concurrent antipsychotic or dopamine-blocking medication, under 18. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist or GP first.

In simple terms

Vitex (chaste tree) works through the pituitary gland to raise progesterone and balance the oestrogen-to-progesterone ratio during the second half of the menstrual cycle. It addresses the hormonal root cause of PMS rather than just the symptoms.
