A willow bark decoction, used traditionally across Europe for everyday aches. Its main constituent, salicin, is converted by the body into salicylic acid, which is the chemistry that made willow bark interesting to researchers in the first place.
1. Add 1–2 tsp of dried willow bark to 250ml cold water in a small saucepan. 2. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10–15 minutes covered. 3. Strain and allow to cool slightly before drinking. Drink 1–3 cups daily with food to minimize gastric irritation. 4. Effects build over 1–2 weeks of consistent use. Do not use alongside aspirin or NSAIDs. Avoid if aspirin-sensitive.
Fuller benefits typically build over 2 to 4 weeks of consistent daily use.
Not the right fit if any of these apply to you: aspirin allergy, peptic ulcer, children under 16, pregnancy. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist or GP first.
Willow bark contains salicin, which your liver converts into salicylic acid. That conversion is gradual, so willow bark behaves quite differently from anything you would take from a packet, and it is not a substitute for one.
Take with food and a full glass of water. Allow 30 to 60 minutes for salicin to reach peak effect after conversion in the liver. Do not exceed recommended dose.
