Zinc Immune & Cold Defence

Category: Immune

Zinc is essential for neutrophil, natural killer cell, and T-lymphocyte function. As a lozenge, ionic zinc directly inhibits rhinovirus replication in the nasopharynx. Multiple meta-analyses confirm zinc lozenges taken within 24 hours of cold onset reduce duration significantly.

How to prepare

1. For acute cold: start zinc lozenges within 24 hours of first symptoms. Take one lozenge (10–15mg elemental zinc) every 2 hours while awake. 2. Use zinc acetate or gluconate lozenges — these release ionic zinc in the nasopharynx where rhinovirus replicates. 3. IMPORTANT: do NOT use zinc nasal sprays — linked to permanent loss of smell. 4. For daily immune maintenance: 15–30mg zinc with food. Long-term high-dose (above 40mg daily) can deplete copper — supplement if needed.

Why it works

Ionic zinc inhibits rhinovirus ICAM-1 binding; systemic zinc supports T-cell, NK cell, and neutrophil function

Time to effect

Immune resilience improved with 4 to 6 weeks consistent supplementation
