Screen eye strain is real, but the best-selling fix for it, blue-light glasses, has little evidence behind it. Here is what genuinely eases tired eyes, why blinking and breaks matter, and where lutein and zeaxanthin honestly sit.

Blue-light glasses are one of the most successful health products of the last decade, and one of the least supported. They were sold on an intuitive story: screens emit blue light, blue light strains your eyes, so filter the blue light and your eyes feel better. The story is tidy, memorable, and mostly wrong. When researchers actually tested blue-light filtering lenses against ordinary lenses, they found little or no benefit for eye strain. The reason is not that the eyes are fine, they are genuinely tired, but that the culprit was misidentified. Screen eye strain comes overwhelmingly from how you use your eyes at a screen, not from the colour of the light coming off it. Getting that straight is the difference between spending money on a gadget that does nothing and adopting a few free habits that actually work.

Digital eye strain, sometimes called computer vision syndrome, is the familiar cluster of tired, dry, aching eyes, sometimes with blurred vision or a headache, that builds over a long session at a screen. A review by Rosenfield laid out its main mechanisms, and blue light is not the headline [1]. Two things dominate.
The first is sustained near-focus. Looking at something close for a long time keeps the eye's focusing muscle contracted, and like any muscle held tense, it fatigues. The second, and arguably the bigger, is reduced blinking. People blink far less when concentrating on a screen, which lets the tear film evaporate and leaves the eye surface dry, gritty and irritated. Add in glare, poor lighting, an awkward screen position, or an uncorrected glasses prescription, and you have the full picture. Crucially, all of these are mechanical or environmental, which is why the fixes that work are mechanical and environmental too. And reassuringly, for most people this is temporary discomfort, not lasting damage.
Because it is such a widespread belief, it is worth being direct. A Cochrane systematic review by Singh and colleagues examined blue-light filtering spectacle lenses and concluded they probably make little or no difference to eye strain from screen use, and found no good evidence that they protect the retina or improve sleep either [2]. This is a well-conducted review reaching a confident conclusion, not a gap awaiting better data.
That does not mean blue-light glasses harm you; they are simply beside the point for eye strain. If you already own a pair and like them, no harm done. But buying them as a solution to tired eyes is spending money on the wrong mechanism. The eye strain is real; blue light just is not causing it. The one place blue light has a more legitimate conversation is evening light exposure and sleep timing, which is a separate topic from eye strain and where reducing bright screen light at night has better rationale than a lens tint.
It is worth pausing on why the myth was so persuasive, because the lesson generalises. The story had all the features that make health claims spread: a plausible-sounding villain (high-energy light), a visible product that let you feel you were doing something, and a real symptom to attach it to. Take regular breaks from near-focus. The widely taught 20-20-20 rule suggests that every 20 minutes you look at something roughly 20 feet, about 6 metres, away for 20 seconds. This lets the focusing muscle relax and naturally prompts a few blinks. The direct trial evidence for the exact numbers is limited, but the principle, periodically relaxing near-focus, is sound, harmless and sensible. The precise interval matters less than the habit of looking away often.
Blink on purpose. Since the core problem is that you stop blinking, consciously blinking fully and more often, and taking deliberate eye-rest moments, directly counters the dryness. It sounds trivial and it genuinely helps.
Fix the setup. Position the screen slightly below eye level and at a comfortable arm's length, cut glare from windows and lights, and make sure the room is not much darker than the screen. Good ergonomics reduce both focusing effort and the tendency to stare.
Treat dry eyes. If your eyes are dry, lubricating drops can ease the surface irritation that breaks and blinking do not fully resolve. Dryness is a large part of the discomfort for many people.
Wear the right prescription. An uncorrected or outdated glasses prescription forces the eyes to work harder and is a common, easily missed cause of strain. A routine eye test catches it.
Lutein and zeaxanthin are the supplements most associated with eye health, and their logic is real: these carotenoids concentrate in the macula, the central retina, where they filter light and act as antioxidants. That has made them a natural candidate for screen-related symptoms.
The evidence for eye strain specifically is modest. A trial by Stringham and colleagues in people with high screen-time exposure reported improvements in some visual and physical symptoms with macular carotenoid supplementation [3]. That is a genuine signal, but it is a single line of limited evidence, not a robust body of proof, and the first source of these nutrients is diet: leafy greens like spinach and kale, and eggs. So the honest framing is that lutein and zeaxanthin are a plausible, optional add-on with a modest signal, best obtained from food first, and worth trying with tempered expectations rather than as a cure for tired eyes. They do nothing about the mechanical causes, so they never replace breaks and blinking.
Because reduced blinking and dryness sit at the heart of screen eye strain, a closer look at the eye surface pays off. The tear film is a thin, layered coating that keeps the front of the eye smooth, clear and comfortable, and it relies on regular blinking to refresh it. When you concentrate on a screen, your blink rate can fall dramatically, and the blinks you do make are often incomplete, so the tear film thins and evaporates. The result is the gritty, burning, tired sensation people describe, sometimes with paradoxically watery eyes as the surface over-corrects. This is why lubricating drops help and why deliberate, full blinking is not a trivial tip but a direct fix for the mechanism.
The environment feeds into the same problem. Dry, air-conditioned or heated rooms speed tear evaporation, so a slightly more humid space, or simply being aware of it, can ease symptoms. Air blowing directly at your face, from a fan, vent or car heater, is a common and fixable aggravator. Contact lens wearers tend to suffer more, because lenses can reduce comfort and increase dryness during long screen sessions, and giving the eyes a lens-free evening sometimes helps.
Then there are the screen settings people rarely adjust but should. A screen that is much brighter or much dimmer than the surrounding room forces the eyes to work harder, so matching screen brightness to the ambient light reduces effort. Text that is too small makes you strain and lean in, so increasing font size and working at a comfortable arm's length both help. Reducing glare, by repositioning the screen away from windows and bright lights or using a matte surface, cuts the squinting that adds to fatigue. None of these are exotic, and that is the point: screen eye strain is an environmental and behavioural problem, so the fixes are environmental and behavioural, and they are almost all free. It is worth noticing how completely this list is dominated by setup and habit, and how absent any supplement or gadget is from the part of the story that actually determines comfort.
