Stand in the sleep aisle and valerian and melatonin sit almost side by side, both promising a better night, both cheap, both over the counter. It is natural to treat them as two versions of the same thing and to pick whichever the packaging sells harder. That instinct is the mistake this article is here to fix.
Valerian and melatonin are not competitors doing the same job slightly differently. They are answers to different questions. One is a timing signal that tells your body it is night. The other is a calming herb that aims to lower how wired you feel. Ask which is better in the abstract and the only honest answer is another question: better for what? A tool that fixes a body clock stuck in the wrong time zone is useless against a racing mind at a perfectly normal bedtime, and the reverse is just as true.
So the useful comparison is not "which wins." It is "which problem do you actually have, and which of these was built for it." Get that right and you will make a better choice than most people who reach for either. So valerian's proposed job is to lower arousal, to help a keyed-up nervous system settle. It is a plant aiming at how you feel, not a hormone aiming at what time your body thinks it is.
That single distinction, timing versus arousal, is the key to the whole comparison. Melatonin moves the clock. Valerian tries to quiet the mind. Which you need depends on what is actually going wrong.
Melatonin's reputation is often built on the wrong claim. It is frequently sold as a general sleeping pill, and judged that way its evidence is real but modest. Read those two uses together and melatonin's real identity becomes clear. It is a body-clock tool. Where the problem is when you sleep rather than whether you can settle, melatonin has evidence that few natural options can match. The critical detail is timing: because melatonin shifts the clock, taking it at the wrong hour can push your rhythm the wrong way, which is exactly why circadian use is best guided rather than guessed.
Valerian's story is the more sobering of the two, and pretending otherwise would betray the whole point of a comparison like this. Specialist bodies have followed the data: the sleep-medicine consensus does not endorse valerian for chronic insomnia, and NCCIH describes its sleep evidence as inconsistent [6].
The recurring signature across valerian's literature is that subjective sleep quality sometimes improves while objective sleep does not [4]. That is the fingerprint of ritual and expectation rather than a drug reshaping your sleep. Valerian's real credit is safety: an excellent tolerability record and no severe adverse events across large pooled populations [4]. It is a safe herb with a soft, mostly felt effect. That is a fair thing to say about it, and it is a weaker hand than melatonin's for anyone whose problem melatonin actually fits.
Put the grades side by side. Melatonin: moderate for circadian timing, modest for insomnia. Valerian: weak for insomnia. That is the honest scoreboard.
Here is where naming your problem pays off. Sleep complaints are not all the same, and the right choice falls out of the diagnosis.
If your issue is timing, melatonin is the logical pick. Jet lag from crossing several time zones is melatonin's single best-evidenced use [2]. A delayed body clock, where you simply cannot fall asleep until the small hours and cannot wake at a normal time, is a circadian problem that timed melatonin is designed to address [3]. Shift work that scrambles your schedule falls into the same family. In all of these, valerian has essentially nothing to offer, because a calming herb does not move a clock.
If your issue is arousal, the calculation shifts. You lie down at a sensible hour with a body clock that is basically fine, but your mind will not stop and your body will not settle. Melatonin's modest effect on falling asleep might nudge things, but it is not really built for this, because your clock is not the problem. This is the territory where lowering arousal matters, through a genuine wind-down routine and, if you want a herb, a calming one used as part of that ritual. The honest caveat is that valerian's evidence for this is weak, so you are trialling a low-risk option rather than deploying a proven treatment.
And if your issue is chronic, persistent insomnia most nights for months, neither of these is the answer, and it is important to say so. The most effective approach for chronic insomnia is not a supplement at all but cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia, and persistent sleeplessness is a reason to see a clinician rather than to keep experimenting in the supplement aisle.
Translate all of that into a decision.
Start by asking what your sleep problem actually is, because the two products answer different questions. Is it a timing problem, where you sleep at the wrong hours or have crossed time zones? Reach for melatonin, take it close to your target bedtime, and respect that timing is the active ingredient, not dose alone [2][3]. Is it an arousal problem, a wired mind at a normal bedtime? A calming ritual is the more logical lever, and if you fold a herb into it, do so knowing the evidence is soft [4].
Set expectations honestly for either. Melatonin as a general sleeping pill produces a small effect, a few minutes off the time to fall asleep, not oblivion [1]. Valerian is not a same-night aid at all: its onset is gradual, and a fair trial means nightly use over two to four weeks before you judge it [5]. Neither replaces the foundations, consistent timing, a dark cool room, limited late caffeine and alcohol, that do more than any capsule.
And know when to stop guessing. If sleep is bad most nights for weeks, that is a clinician's conversation, not a shelf decision.
Both are generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults, but neither is consequence-free, and the cautions belong in plain sight.
Melatonin is broadly safe for occasional short-term use, and the jet lag literature specifically notes that occasional use appears safe [2]. Its main downside is next-morning grogginess, especially at higher doses or wrong timing, and its long-term effects are less thoroughly studied. Because it shifts the body clock, careless timing can worsen rather than help a circadian problem, which is the strongest argument for getting circadian use guided.
Valerian has an excellent tolerability record, with side effects usually limited to mild headache, stomach upset or mental dullness [6]. But it should not be combined with alcohol or sedatives because of additive drowsiness, it may impair driving and operating machinery, it is not recommended under 12, and its safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established [5][6]. Stopping it abruptly after long regular use may cause withdrawal-type symptoms [6].
For both, the same rule applies to combinations. Do not stack either on top of a prescription sleep medicine, sedative or alcohol on your own initiative, because layering calming or sedating agents can leave you impaired.
