Valerian carries a stronger regulatory footing than most sleep herbs, yet the highest tier of evidence says it does not reliably work. Here is the honest verdict: a safe herb with a weak effect, where subjective sleep sometimes shifts and objective sleep almost never does.

Walk into any pharmacy and valerian is on the shelf, usually near the herbal teas, usually with a picture of someone sleeping soundly on the box. It has been sold as a sleep remedy for centuries. It has a folk reputation so settled that most people never think to question it. And that is exactly why it is worth questioning.
Here is the uncomfortable thing about valerian. It occupies a real contradiction that most articles quietly resolve in the flattering direction. Europe's medicines regulator grants it a genuine, relatively strong regulatory status for sleep. The most authoritative modern synthesis of the evidence concludes it does not reliably work. Both of those statements are true, they are on the record, and an honest answer has to hold them at the same time rather than pick the convenient one.
So this is not a hype piece and it is not a hatchet job. It is the assessment a careful herbalist would give someone who asked, plainly, "I keep seeing valerian everywhere. Does it actually do anything?" The short version: valerian is a safe herb with a weak and mostly subjective effect, and the gap between its reputation and its results is the whole story. The longer version is worth your time, because understanding why the evidence looks the way it does will make you a sharper reader of every sleep product you meet after this one.
Valerian is the root and rhizome of Valeriana officinalis, a flowering plant native to Europe and parts of Asia, now placed by botanists in the Caprifoliaceae family rather than the older Valerianaceae grouping many herbals still use. The part used in medicine is the underground portion, which carries the plant's characteristic pungent smell and its active compounds: valerenic acid, the valepotriates, and a mix of volatile oils and sesquiterpenes [8].
The proposed mechanism is plausible and worth stating plainly, because plausibility is not the same as proof. Valerian's constituents appear to interact with the GABA system, the brain's main calming signalling pathway, which is also where several conventional sedatives act. That gives valerian a reasonable biological story for why it might quieten the nervous system [8]. The catch is that a mechanism review of herbal GABAergic activity concluded the way valerian would work in insomnia is "not completely understood" [9]. A plausible pathway is a starting point for investigation, not a finished case.
That distinction, plausible mechanism versus demonstrated effect, is the hinge this entire article turns on.
Start with the strongest thing you can honestly say for valerian. The European Medicines Agency's herbal monograph grants it a "well established use" indication for the relief of mild nervous tension and sleep disorders [2]. That matters, because it is a real regulatory footing that many popular calming herbs do not have. Chamomile and lavender, for comparison, are registered by the same body only under traditional use, the weaker category. Valerian genuinely sits a rung higher.
But read what that status actually rests on. Well established use is built from long-standing use and older published literature. It is not a verdict handed down by contemporary high-quality randomised trials. And when those modern trials are gathered up and pooled properly, the picture changes.
The most authoritative synthesis available is a 2024 umbrella review, a review of systematic reviews, which screened 70 records and analysed eight systematic reviews [1]. Its conclusion is not ambiguous. The results "showed no evidence of efficacy for the treatment of insomnia." Valerian, it found, "appears to be effective concerning subjective improvement of sleep quality, although its effectiveness has not been demonstrated with quantitative or objective measurements." And the verdict, stated bluntly by the authors: "Despite its widespread use and prescription by general practitioners, psychiatrists and other professionals, valerian does not have empirical support for insomnia" [1].
Two things are true at once. A real regulatory recognition, earned largely by history. A modern evidence base that does not support the reputation. The reputation, not the data, is doing the heavy lifting.
If you line up the independent verdicts, a consistent pattern emerges, and it is not the one the packaging implies.
The 2024 umbrella review, the highest tier of synthesis, found no evidence of efficacy for insomnia and noted the underlying studies were "quite heterogeneous and with low methodological quality" [1]. That is the headline.
Working down from there, an older 2006 systematic review and meta-analysis of 16 trials in 1,093 patients did report a benefit: dichotomous sleep quality improved with a relative risk of 1.8 [4]. That sounds encouraging until you read the same paper's own caveat, that "there was evidence of publication bias in this summary measure," and that most studies had "significant methodologic problems," with doses, preparations and treatment lengths varying considerably [4]. It is a positive result the authors themselves undercut. Publication bias means the trials that found nothing were less likely to be published, which inflates the apparent effect.
A 2010 systematic review of complementary approaches to insomnia found evidentiary support for practices like tai chi and yoga, but described the evidence for herbal medicines such as valerian as "weak and unsupportive" [5]. A 2022 Bayesian network meta-analysis looking at valerian for anxiety produced a point estimate that actually landed on the wrong side of zero, favouring placebo, with a credible interval so wide it was uninformative; the authors concluded there was "insufficient evidence to confirm the effectiveness of Valerian" [6].
There is one substantially positive recent synthesis, and it deserves a careful read rather than a triumphant citation. A 2020 systematic review and meta-analysis pooling 60 studies in almost 6,900 participants concluded valerian "could be a safe and effective herb to promote sleep" [7]. But its actual argument is subtler than that line suggests. It attributes the inconsistency across the literature to the variable quality of herbal extracts, suggests more reliable effects might come from whole root and rhizome preparations, and calls for better standardisation and quality control [7]. That is a hypothesis about why trials keep failing, not a demonstration that the herb reliably works. It is a defence of valerian, not a vindication of it.
Now the pattern. Look back across all of it. Subjective sleep quality sometimes moves. Objective sleep, the kind measured by instruments rather than questionnaires, essentially never does [1]. That specific signature, a self-reported improvement with no matching change on the instruments, is what you would expect from ritual, routine and expectation rather than from a drug quietening the brain. It is not nothing. Feeling better about your sleep has real value. But it is not the same as a sedative that changes your sleep, and the difference is exactly what an honest label would tell you.
To be clear about the grade in plain words: the evidence for valerian is weak. That is the honest verdict, and saying so is the point of this article.
If the trial literature leaves room for doubt, the clinical bodies that read it for a living have been more decisive. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine, in its 2017 clinical practice guideline, recommended against using valerian for chronic insomnia in adults [3]. That is a professional society, having weighed the evidence, advising clinicians not to use it for the exact problem it is most often sold to solve.
The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health is only slightly softer, describing the sleep evidence as "inconsistent" and, on anxiety, concluding there is "not enough evidence to allow any conclusions about whether valerian is helpful" [3]. These are not fringe sceptics. They are the mainstream bodies whose job is to tell the public what the science supports, and on valerian they are unenthusiastic.
None of this makes valerian a scam. It makes it a herb whose folk reputation has outrun its data, which is a common and important distinction to be able to draw.
So should you ignore valerian entirely? Not necessarily. But you should use it with clear eyes, and the honest guidance looks different from the marketing.
If you want to try it, treat it as a low-risk experiment rather than a treatment. European guidance for the recognised indication is a single dose of 400 to 600mg of dry extract, taken 30 to 60 minutes before bed, with an earlier evening dose if needed [2]. NCCIH describes a common range of 300 to 600mg daily [3]. Crucially, this is not a same-night sleep aid. The European monograph is explicit that valerian has a gradual onset and is "not suitable for acute interventional treatment," recommending continued use over two to four weeks to reach any optimal effect [2]. If you take one dose tonight and judge it in the morning, you are testing it in a way the evidence says is unfair to it and to you.
Set your expectations to match the data. What the research supports, at best, is that your sleep may feel somewhat better. What it does not support is a reliable change in how quickly you fall asleep or how long you stay asleep, measured objectively [1]. If after a fortnight of nightly use nothing has shifted, that is your answer, and there is no reason to keep going.
Watch the interactions and limits. Valerian should not be combined with alcohol or sedative medicines [3]. It may impair your ability to drive or operate machinery, a caution the European monograph states outright [2]. And if it is genuinely helping you wind down, be honest with yourself about how much of that is the herb and how much is the ritual around it, because the ritual is portable and free.
Valerian has an unusually good tolerability record, which is one of the few things the evidence lets us say warmly. Across a pooled literature of nearly 6,900 participants, no severe adverse events were reported [7]. Side effects, when they occur, are typically mild: headache, stomach upset, mental dullness, excitability, uneasiness and vivid dreams [3].
There are real limits, though, and they belong under their own heading rather than in the small print.
Do not combine valerian with alcohol or sedative medications, because of additive drowsiness [3]. It is not recommended in children under 12, a hard stop in the European monograph [2]. Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established, so it is not recommended in either [2]. Abruptly stopping valerian after prolonged regular use may cause withdrawal-type symptoms including anxiety, irritability and insomnia, so taper rather than quit cold if you have been taking it nightly for a long stretch [3]. Long-term safety beyond about six weeks is simply not well studied [3].
On the liver, keep the risk in proportion. Valerian carries a LiverTox likelihood score of C, meaning it is a probable but rare cause of clinically apparent liver injury, with fewer than a dozen identified cases, and those usually occurred when valerian was taken in combination with other botanicals such as skullcap or black cohosh [8]. Given how widely it is used, it is considered a very rare cause of liver injury, but the signal is real and it attaches specifically to multi-herb blends rather than to valerian alone [8]. If you use a combination sleep product, that is worth knowing.

We are not going to tell you valerian is a proven sleep cure, because the evidence will not let us, and pretending otherwise is exactly the behaviour that made you sceptical of wellness marketing in the first place. What valerian is, honestly, is a safe herb with a soft effect that lives inside a wind-down ritual, and the ritual is where a lot of its value sits.
If your real problem is a racing mind at bedtime and a routine that does not signal rest, a calming evening ritual can do genuine work regardless of which herb is in the cup. The honest answer is that the strongest evidence says no, not reliably. A 2024 umbrella review of systematic reviews, the highest tier of synthesis available, found no evidence of efficacy for insomnia. People often report that their sleep feels better, but that subjective shift is rarely matched by objective measures like time to fall asleep or total sleep recorded in a lab. It is a safe herb with a weak, mostly subjective effect.

Yes, if you go in with clear eyes. It is safe for short-term use, well tolerated, and part of a calming bedtime ritual that has value in its own right. The honest framing is that you are trialling a low-risk herb with a soft effect, not taking a proven treatment. Give it two to four weeks, judge it on your own experience, and drop it if nothing shifts.
This is exactly the combination to clear with a prescriber first. Valerian should not be taken with sedatives or alcohol because of additive drowsiness, and stacking calming agents can leave you groggy or impaired the next day. The published guidance is explicit that valerian may affect driving and machinery. Do not layer it onto a prescription sleep medication without professional advice.
Because the two are judging different things. Europe''s well established use status rests on long-standing use and older literature, not on a fresh verdict from high-quality modern trials. When those trials are pooled properly, the effect largely disappears. Both statements are true at once: a real regulatory footing, and a modern evidence base that does not hold up.
