Shilajit is marketed as an ancient energy and testosterone booster, but the human evidence is thin and the contamination risk is real. Here is what fulvic acid is, what the few trials show, and why purity matters more than any benefit claim.

Shilajit has had an extraordinary couple of years. A sticky black resin scraped from high mountain rocks, sold in little pots and syringes, wrapped in a story about ancient Himalayan vitality and pushed hard by a certain corner of social media as a testosterone and energy tonic for men. The marketing is genuinely good. It is rare, it is old, it comes from somewhere remote and dramatic, and it promises exactly the things a large audience wants to buy. Very little of that marketing pauses to mention how thin the actual evidence is, or that the most important question about a pot of shilajit is not whether it works but what else is in it.
That is the honest framing this piece is built on, and it flips the usual order. For most supplements the interesting question is efficacy and the safety is a footnote. For shilajit it is close to the reverse. The efficacy evidence is early and modest, and the safety question, contamination, is the one that should decide whether you buy a given product at all. Get that ordering right and shilajit becomes much easier to think about clearly.
What follows is what shilajit and fulvic acid actually are, what the small human trials show and do not show, and why purity is the variable that matters most. It is not an attack on a traditional substance, and it is not an advert. It is a grade.
Shilajit is a mineral-rich, tar-like exudate that seeps from cracks in rocks in the Himalayas and other high mountain ranges, formed over a very long time from slowly decomposed plant material compressed in the rock. In Ayurvedic tradition it is a rasayana, a rejuvenating tonic, used for stamina and vitality, which is where its modern positioning comes from. In supplement form it is purified and usually standardised to a stated percentage of fulvic acid.
Fulvic acid is the compound shilajit is credited with, and the one products are standardised to. It is a component of humic substances, the family of compounds that forms as organic matter breaks down over long periods, and it is abundant in the exudate that becomes shilajit [3]. Shilajit also contains a spread of trace minerals and other small molecules, which is part of both its appeal and its risk, because a substance rich in whatever the rock contained will carry the rock's contaminants as readily as its nutrients.
One mechanism sentence to anchor it: fulvic acid and the other shilajit constituents are proposed to support cellular energy production and to act as antioxidants, and in laboratory work fulvic acid has shown some ability to interfere with protein aggregation, which is the basis of the cognitive interest [3]. Proposed and shown in the laboratory are the operative words. Human confirmation is where shilajit thins out.
Strip away the story and the human trial base for shilajit is small enough to describe in a couple of paragraphs, which itself tells you something.
The most cited human study is a randomised, placebo-controlled trial of purified shilajit at 250mg twice daily in healthy men aged 45 to 55 over 90 days. It reported significant increases in total testosterone, free testosterone and the adrenal precursor DHEAS compared with placebo, while pituitary hormones (LH and FSH) stayed stable [1]. That is a real, positive finding, and it is the strongest single result shilajit has. It is also one small study, in a specific middle-aged male group, standardised to a high fulvic acid content, and it has not been replicated at scale. An early signal worth larger study is the fair reading, not a settled testosterone booster.
The second strand is physical performance. A small randomised trial gave shilajit at 250mg or 500mg a day for eight weeks and found that the higher dose helped participants retain maximal muscular strength after a fatiguing protocol, with an effect on a connective-tissue marker [2]. Again, genuine and again small, and it speaks to strength retention under fatigue rather than a broad energy boost.
The cognitive claims, which feature heavily in marketing, are the weakest link. The most cited cognitive paper is a review that lays out a plausible biochemical rationale for fulvic acid and then explicitly flags the absence of clinical trials, proposing shilajit as a candidate for future study rather than reporting a proven effect [3]. Building a cognitive claim on a paper whose main message is that the trials have not been done is exactly the kind of move honest grading exists to catch.
So the picture is a few small human trials pointing in interesting directions, and a great deal of laboratory and traditional-use material doing the rest of the persuading.
Put together, shilajit earns a grade of weak to limited. There is a small, real testosterone signal from one trial, a small strength-retention signal from another, and mechanism-only support for the cognitive and energy claims that dominate its marketing. Nothing here is large, long, or replicated enough to call moderate, let alone strong.
That is not the same as saying shilajit does nothing. It is saying the confident claims have run far ahead of the evidence, and that the responsible position is curiosity rather than conviction. Traditional use gives it a long safety-observation history in a general sense, but traditional use is not efficacy, and a striking origin story is not a trial. If you see shilajit sold as a proven testosterone or energy solution, that is the marketing talking, not the science.
The reason the grade matters so much here is that shilajit's biggest question is not on the efficacy side at all. It is on safety, and it is serious enough to deserve its own section.
Here is what separates shilajit from most supplements. Because it is collected from rock and is rich in whatever minerals that rock held, raw shilajit can contain heavy metals, lead, arsenic, mercury and cadmium among them [4][5]. These are not trace curiosities. They are cumulative toxins: they build up in the body over time and are associated with neurological and organ damage at sustained exposure. A substance whose selling point is that it is packed with mountain minerals is, by the same token, a substance that can be packed with mountain contaminants.
This is why purification is not an optional refinement for shilajit; it is the point. Reputable producers purify the raw resin to reduce contaminants while retaining the fulvic acid, and independent laboratory testing, typically by a method called ICP-MS, is what verifies that a finished product sits below safety limits for each metal [4]. International guidelines set limits for heavy metals in herbal products precisely because botanical and mineral products can carry them [5]. When independent testers have examined shilajit products, contamination has varied by product, which is exactly why the specific product's testing, not the category's reputation, is what you are relying on.
The practical rule follows directly: for shilajit, an untested product is a poor bet at any price and however good the origin story. Look for a stated fulvic acid content and, more importantly, a current independent heavy-metal test or certificate of analysis showing lead, arsenic, mercury and cadmium below the relevant limits. Absent that, you are trusting a rock exudate on faith, and faith is not a contamination screen.
If, having read all that, you still want to try shilajit, the sensible version is narrow and specific.
Buy only a purified product with a current, independent heavy-metal test you can actually see, and a stated fulvic acid percentage. Treat origin marketing, pure, ancient, Himalayan, as decoration rather than reassurance. Use a dose comparable to the small trials, around 250mg once or twice a day, and do not assume more is better, since higher doses have shown no added benefit and increase any contamination exposure. Give the testosterone rationale the 90 days its trial used if that is your interest, and keep your expectations low, because one small study is what sits behind it.
And be honest about the alternatives for whatever you are actually chasing. If the goal is testosterone, sleep, body composition, resistance training and dealing with any underlying issues do far more than any supplement. If the goal is energy, sleep quality, iron and vitamin status, and thyroid checks where relevant are the higher-value moves. Shilajit is, at best, a small optional extra on top of those, not a replacement for them.
The heavy-metal question above is the headline safety issue, and it applies to everyone. Beyond it, a few groups should be more careful still.
Shilajit is rich in minerals including iron, so it should be avoided by people with iron-overload conditions such as haemochromatosis, and by anyone advised to limit iron.
It should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding. There is no adequate safety data for those situations, and the contamination risk makes caution more important, not less.
Anyone on regular medication should treat shilajit like any mineral-rich product and check for timing and interaction issues, particularly given its iron and mineral content.
And because the contamination risk is product-specific, the safest position for anyone in a higher-risk group is to treat an untested shilajit as unsuitable outright, rather than hoping a given pot is clean.

Shilajit is a useful test of whether a supplement library is honest, because everything about it, the story, the rarity, the masculine-energy marketing, pushes towards hype, and the evidence quietly asks for restraint. The honest grade is weak to limited, the confident claims are early-stage, and the single most important fact about any given product is whether it has been purified and independently tested for heavy metals. A library that sold shilajit on its origin story would be failing exactly the standard it should hold every ingredient to.

The honest answer is that the evidence is thin and early. There are a few small human trials, most notably one showing raised testosterone markers in middle-aged men over 90 days, and one showing better retention of muscle strength after a fatiguing protocol. Neither is large or long, and the cognitive claims rest on laboratory mechanism rather than human trials. So shilajit is not a proven performance booster; it is a traditionally used substance with a small, preliminary evidence base and some real safety questions.
Fulvic acid is the main compound shilajit is standardised to, and the one credited with most of its proposed activity. No. Origin marketing tells you nothing about contamination, and raw mountain resin is exactly the kind of product most likely to carry heavy metals. What matters is whether the specific product has been purified and independently tested, ideally with a certificate showing lead, arsenic, mercury and cadmium below safety limits. Because it has a compelling story, ancient, rare, collected from high mountains, and that story travels well on social media, especially attached to testosterone and masculine energy marketing. Popularity is running well ahead of the science here. A striking origin and a strong marketing angle are not evidence, and the honest position is that shilajit is trending faster than its trials can justify. Interesting, traditional, early-stage, and not proven.
Creatine has a deep, well-established evidence base for strength and power; shilajit has one small muscle-fatigue trial. They are not in the same evidence league, and pairing them does not lend shilajit creatine's credibility. If your goal is performance, creatine is the evidenced choice, and shilajit is an optional extra with thin support and a contamination caveat. Do not treat them as equivalents just because they share a shelf.
