When a herb you are considering has good human evidence, look at what preparation the studies used, then check whether the product matches it, marker, level and daily dose. That match is worth paying the extract premium for. For herbs where the evidence is weak regardless, remember that no amount of standardisation changes the underlying grade; a consistent dose of a herb that does little is still a herb that does little. Standardisation improves your odds of a dependable dose, not the herb's odds of working.
Standardisation is a quality practice, not a safety guarantee. A standardised extract can still carry the same contraindications and interactions as the herb it comes from, and a more concentrated extract may deliver active compounds more reliably, which cuts both ways. Quality standardisation does not remove the need to check a herb's own cautions.
