Cortisol is the internet's favourite villain, blamed for weight, sleep and puffy faces. The reality is calmer: it is an essential hormone with a daily rhythm, and the goal is a healthy curve, not the lowest possible number.

The sharpest surge of cortisol you produce all day happens before you are properly awake. In the half hour after your eyes open, the hormone climbs fast, nudging blood sugar up, lifting blood pressure and clearing the mental fog so you can get out of bed and meet the day. By late evening it has drained back to a fraction of that level, low enough to let you sleep. Cortisol is not an alarm that only sounds under threat. It is a hormone on a schedule, and that schedule runs every single day of your life.
That is not the cortisol most people have heard about. Online it has been renamed the enemy, held responsible for belly fat, poor sleep and a puffy "cortisol face", and sold against with powders and reset protocols. The biology tells a calmer story. Cortisol is one of the most essential hormones you make, and people whose bodies cannot produce enough of it become seriously ill. So before you try to lower it, it is worth knowing what it actually is, what the daily curve looks like, how it keeps itself in check, and why so much of the marketing built on it overreaches.
Cortisol is a steroid hormone made by your adrenal glands, the small glands that sit on top of the kidneys. It is released under the control of a signalling chain called the HPA axis and does a long list of everyday jobs: it raises blood sugar to make energy available, supports blood pressure, dampens inflammation, and sharpens attention when the body senses a demand [1]. Under acute stress it rises to help you meet a challenge, then settles again once the challenge passes. That is the design working as intended.
It is worth spelling out how much of ordinary life cortisol quietly runs, because the villain framing hides all of it. Cortisol helps turn food into usable energy and keeps blood sugar steady in the gap between meals. It maintains blood pressure and the tone of your blood vessels. It restrains the immune system, which is exactly why synthetic relatives such as hydrocortisone are prescribed as anti-inflammatory drugs. It even feeds into memory and mood. None of that is a malfunction. It is one hormone doing a great deal of unremarkable, necessary work, most of it nothing to do with a crisis [1].
Because of the stress role it gets called the stress hormone, but the label undersells it. Cortisol is not only a fire alarm. It is part of the routine machinery of metabolism, running on a schedule whether or not anything stressful is happening [1]. The single most important thing to understand about it is not that it responds to stress, but that it follows a rhythm.
Cortisol is not a flat, steady level. It follows a strong daily pattern, a diurnal rhythm. It surges in the first 30 to 45 minutes after you wake, the cortisol awakening response, which helps get you up and moving. It then tapers across the day to a low point in the late evening and overnight, when the body is meant to rest and sleep [1]. Drawn out, it looks like a wave: a sharp morning peak, a long slope down, a quiet trough at night.
That waking surge is consistent enough to serve as a biological marker. When researchers sampled saliva every 10 to 15 minutes after waking in 152 people, free cortisol rose by 50 to 75 per cent within the first half hour in every group tested, children, adults and older people alike, and the pattern was stable enough across repeated days to reflect a real individual trait rather than noise [6]. In other words, the morning peak is not a quirk you can will away. It is a scheduled event, and its size and timing are part of what a healthy rhythm means.
A healthy cortisol profile is that curve. The aim is a robust morning peak and a low night-time trough, not the lowest possible number at every hour. This is the piece the panic leaves out. You are not trying to defeat cortisol; you are trying to keep its rhythm intact. Trouble tends to show up when the curve is flattened or shifted, when the morning peak is blunted or the evening never quite comes down, and the usual causes are chronic stress and disrupted sleep rather than the hormone itself being the enemy.
Sleep and cortisol are especially tightly linked. In a controlled study, plasma cortisol across the evening was substantially higher, on the order of 37 to 45 per cent, the day after sleep loss, and the normal quiet, low-cortisol window was delayed [2]. A bad night does not just make you tired; it measurably lifts the next evening's cortisol and blunts the rhythm, which is one reason poor sleep and stress can feed each other.
Cortisol does not pour out unchecked, and the loop that governs it is the direct antidote to the idea that the hormone simply runs away with you. The chain starts in the brain. The hypothalamus releases a signal called corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), which tells the pituitary gland to release adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which in turn tells the adrenal glands to make cortisol [1]. That is the accelerator, and it is the same HPA axis that fires when you meet a genuine demand.
The brake is cortisol itself. As cortisol rises, it binds to glucocorticoid receptors in the hypothalamus and the pituitary and switches off the very signals that triggered its release, damping CRH and ACTH so that output falls back down again [5]. This is negative feedback, the same principle a thermostat uses: the output of the system feeds back to shut the system off. It is why a healthy stress response spikes and then subsides rather than climbing without limit, and why cortisol settles back to baseline once a challenge has passed.
Two things follow from this. First, the loop, not the raw level, is what matters, so a single high reading taken mid-spike tells you very little about whether the system is working. Second, the real problem with chronic stress is not that the glands run out. It is that relentless demand keeps the accelerator pressed and, over time, dulls the sensitivity of the brake, so the rhythm flattens and the evening never quite comes down [5]. That is a failure of regulation, which is a very different picture from the popular idea of adrenals wearing out.
Now the part that costs people money. A whole genre of products promises to reset your cortisol or reset your adrenals, usually fast, usually for a price. The physiology does not support it.
There is no quick cortisol reset. Cortisol is regulated moment to moment by a feedback loop, and the things that genuinely shape its rhythm, sleep, stress load, daylight, exercise, act over days and weeks, not in an afternoon capsule. A product that claims to reset your cortisol overnight is describing a mechanism that does not exist.
The reset framing usually leans on adrenal fatigue, the idea that chronic stress slowly exhausts the adrenal glands until they cannot make enough cortisol. A systematic review of 58 studies concluded there is no substantiation that adrenal fatigue exists, and no endocrinology society recognises it [3]. That matters twice over. It means chasing a low cortisol number to fix tired adrenals is usually solving a problem you do not have, and it means the tiredness you feel is real but wrongly explained. Exhaustion is far more likely to come from sleep debt and relentless stress load than from depleted glands.
There is a separate, genuine category of cortisol disease, conditions such as Cushing's syndrome, where cortisol really is too high, and Addison's disease, where it is too low. These are rare, diagnosed by doctors using validated tests, and quite different from the popular reset narrative. The viral cortisol face, for instance, borrows a real feature of Cushing's and stretches it over ordinary puffiness. If you genuinely suspect a hormone disorder, the answer is a clinician and proper testing, not an at-home saliva kit sold alongside a supplement, because a single snapshot of a hormone that swings this much is very hard to interpret.
If cortisol has been worrying you, the reframe is the useful part. Stop trying to crush a number and start supporting a rhythm.
The highest-yield levers are unglamorous and mostly free. Protecting sleep matters most, because sleep loss reliably lifts cortisol and fixing it brings the evening level back down within a day or two [2]. Consistent sleep and wake times, morning daylight to anchor the rhythm, regular moderate movement and genuine downtime do more for the curve than any product on the shelf. Where a supplement fits at all, it is as an adjunct for a real, sustained stress load, and even the best-evidenced option works slowly and only when cortisol is genuinely elevated.
Do not chase a reading. A one-off cortisol measurement, especially from a home kit, is easy to misread as a problem that needs medicating. Cortisol is meant to rise and fall, so a single high or low value taken at the wrong time of day can look alarming while telling you nothing useful. The context of the daily curve is what makes a reading meaningful, and that context is exactly what a snapshot lacks.
There is also a simple mindset shift worth making. Instead of asking how to lower your cortisol, ask what is keeping your stress response switched on. That question points at the real drivers, sleep debt and a relentless load, rather than at the hormone itself. Fix the drivers and the number tends to look after itself. And know the line for a clinician: severe, persistent exhaustion, or a genuine suspicion of a hormone disorder, is a reason to see a doctor for proper testing rather than to buy another cortisol powder.
Because ashwagandha is the supplement most people pick up when they want to lower cortisol, its cautions deserve stating rather than burying.
Ashwagandha is not right for everyone. It is contraindicated in pregnancy and not advised while breastfeeding, it affects thyroid hormones and so is a concern in thyroid conditions and with thyroid medication, it is generally avoided in autoimmune conditions without oversight, and it carries a rare liver signal [4]. It reduces elevated cortisol toward baseline in stressed adults over roughly two months, not overnight, and does little in someone already calm and well rested [4]. Treat any product promising a fast cortisol reset with scepticism, because the physiology does not move that quickly.

Understanding cortisol is worth more than chasing it. Once you can read the curve, the morning peak, the evening trough, the way stress and short sleep distort both, the daily choices that steady it become obvious, and most of them cost nothing.

The viral cortisol face idea takes a real feature of a rare disease and applies it to ordinary tiredness and puffiness, which usually have simpler explanations. If you suspect a genuine cortisol disorder, that is a matter for a doctor and proper testing.
Through blood, saliva or urine, and timing is everything because cortisol swings so much across the day. Doctors use validated protocols, sometimes multiple samples or dynamic tests, to diagnose genuine cortisol disorders. At-home saliva kits marketed for adrenal fatigue are hard to interpret from a single snapshot and are not a reliable route to a diagnosis. A one-off reading tells you little without the context of timing and the daily rhythm.
Chronic psychological stress and poor sleep are the two biggest everyday drivers. The stress response is built for short bursts, and sustained, unrelenting stress keeps the system switched on. Sleep loss reliably pushes the next day's cortisol up. Intense or prolonged exercise raises it acutely as a normal response, and heavy caffeine and alcohol can nudge it too. The everyday levers are stress and sleep far more than any single food or supplement.
Probably not, unless a doctor has diagnosed a reason. For most people cortisol is doing its job and the feeling of being tired and wired reflects stress load and sleep debt rather than a hormone that needs medicating down. Chasing a low number often distracts from the levers that actually help. If symptoms are severe or persistent, see a clinician who can test properly rather than reaching for a cortisol supplement.
